The median age is 42.0, with 25.1 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 20.7 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 2,346, with an average size of 2.4 persons. Of those, 1,532 are family households, with an average size of 2.9 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 2,509 total housing units. Population density, 2002: 156.5 persons per square mile of land area. Peterborough contains 38.0 square miles of land area and 0.4 square miles of inland water area. Origin: Although not known for certain, this town was probably named from Charles Mordaunt, third Earl of Peterborough. Other possibilities include it having been named Peter's Borough for Peter Prescott, clerk of the Masonian Proprietors, or for St. Petersburg in Russia. Peterborough was among the soldier's towns named during the term of Governor Jonathan Belcher when New Hampshire was still a province of Massachusetts. The town had the first free public library supported by taxation, and the first mill in the state that wove cloth mechanically. It is home to the MacDowell Colony, a retreat for writers, artists, and composers. Guests have included Edward Arlington Robinson, Leonard Bernstein, and Thornton Wilder, whose play "Our Town" was inspired by Peterborough.

FIELD TRIPS FOR SCIENCE IN AND AROUND NEW YORK
Please remember to plan ahead. Many places require advance reservations. Some popular locations may book up months in advance.
Plan preliminary activities that will prepare your students to get the most from their field experience. Many of these resources provide teacher information packets including lesson plan ideas. Try to select hands-on experiences that will prepare your students to visit with questions to be answered. If suggested activities do not call upon science process skills, use the teacher's guide to help you select related lessons from other resources that are more closely aligned with the new science standards.
Visit before you take your class. Think about where students will eat, the location of bathrooms, and someplace to have a little free time. How long does it take to get from place to place? Don't plan to do too much. The novelty of a field trip makes each experience memorable.

    Research
    Developmental and Cell Biology
Research is directed towards understanding cell motility and the nuclear and cytoskeletal aspects of fertilization. Pronuclear development is a pivotal period during fertilization, because the successful genetic reactivation of the dormant sperm nucleus and maternal chromatin by egg cytoplasm is essential for bipartental embryonic development. One project of the lab is to use an in vitro nuclear system to elucidate the factors regulating male pronuclear development at the cellular and molecular levels. Another area of research analyzes the role of the cytoskeleton in the fertilization process. These projects utilize fluorescence microscopy, video microscopy, and biochemical techniques. The object of these investigations is to gain an understanding of the nucleocytoplasmic interactions in cells.
