Clinical Issues and Considerations Parent Education
Informed parents are better prepared to follow up on presumptive positive test results and to facilitate timely evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of affected infants. Immediate action and treatment are necessary for the prevention of mental retardation, morbidity and mortality associated with the disorders identified by the newborn screening program. Prior knowledge of newborn screening by parents and discussion of test results with the infant’s health care provider further ensure that all infants receive the benefits of this most important public health program. Prior knowledge of the screening also reduces the stress that may be associated with requests for a repeat test. The necessity for a repeat test does not necessarily mean that the infant has one of the screened disorders or may become developmentally delayed. Thus, discussion of this pending public health activity by the obstetrician is strongly urged.

Our belief is that in order to maximize the inclusion of individuals with disabilities into society's mainstream, parents and care-givers must be given timely and relevant information regarding the special education and services available for their child. In order to accommodate this, the Parent Network of WNY is positioning itself to provide the kinds of services that parents will need to help their children succeed. As an agency, the Parent Network of WNY is currently hiring parents who have the ability to train and educate other parents within their individual communities. In addition, it is our goal to offer training, information, library resources and referral linkages to all parents who have an identified need. It is our belief at the Parent Network that, once informed, parents / care-givers are the best advocates for their children!
