The mission of St. Joseph's Seminary and College as the major seminary of the Archdiocese of New York is carried out in four distinct ways.
The primary mission is to achieve excellence in priestly formation for candidates to the Roman Catholic priesthood by providing:
a comprehensive program of human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral formation designed to enable the seminarians to prepare for the ordained priesthood with a clear sense of priestly identity; this includes the understanding, as the Second Vatican Council teaches, that the ministerial priesthood differs in essence from the priesthood of the baptized. "Seminarians presented for priestly ordination should be converted to the service of Christ, understand the tradition of the Church, and possess the attitudes and skills necessary to begin the priestly ministry" (PPF 249).
a Master of Divinity program dedicated to academic excellence and professional competence for seminarians. Students enrolled in this program also receive the degree of Bachelor of Sacred Theology, an academic degree, awarded through the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

Spotlight On Schools Featured Columnists Letters ... Travel New York City July 2003 Special Education in New York City
by Jill Levy Thirty-five years ago, many children, including my own, did not have the right to attend public schools. They were children with “problems”—disabilities that prevented them from learning or attending school as easily as other children. They were placed in private day schools, residential schools or in institutions, removed from their communities, their neighbors and often their families. Parents and children’s advocates fought for years to provide children with the appropriate educational programs in the least restrictive environments. I was among those who won many battles including the ones for smaller class size, the implementation of individualized plans, and evaluation by a committee of experts in specialized fields. Special Education in New York City has evolved since then. We’ve seen increased class size, an entire district just for Special Ed students and now the growing use of immersion programs. Through it all, only one thing remains constant: the only way to navigate the complicated and unique world of Special Ed is to consistently evaluate each student’s progress.

Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program
Introduction The SUNYAB School of Dental Medicine's program for "Advanced Education in General Dentistry" (AEGD) was founded July, 1991. This program is designed to reflect as closely as possible a private general practice setting, while still functioning harmoniously in a dental school environment. Program Goals and Objectives An advanced educational program in general dentistry provides advanced training beyond the level of predoctoral education in clinical dentistry and applied basic and behavioral sciences, as well as refines those skills necessary for the generalist to provide comprehensive patient care for all population groups. It is a planned, sequential postdoctoral training program of one year in length, that is specifically designed to meet the needs of graduates desirous of enhancing their skills as general practitioners. The program is a supplement to the predoctoral curriculum, but is not a required component of that educational sequence. An optional second year is offered as well that expands on the knowledge and experience obtained in the first year of the Program. Admission Procedure Residents are selected from students who have completed a course of study in a CODA accreted dental school and who have graduated with a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree. Applicants must have a New York State License, or be eligible for a New York State Limited Permit to Practice Dentistry.

Recycling
In Depth : Report
New York City's Failing Public Education Campaign for Recycling
Contents page Recommendations In short, the City's recycling program has much to offer and requires careful nurturing. But this nurturing must include an honest identification of weaknesses in the program, so that such shortcomings can be corrected, and the program strengthened. It is with these objectives in mind that NRDC offers six recommendations for improving the City's public education program for recycling.
1. DOS should scrap its existing television ad campaign for recycling.
Accordingly, NRDC recommends that the City terminate its ongoing television ad campaign and revise its program as outlined below.
2. DOS should initiate a new recycling ad campaign that focuses on specifics.
One way of accomplishing this goal would be to invite New York celebrities to appear in a series of television ads that inform New Yorkers about individual parts of the waste stream providing specific information on what to recycle in that area. (For example: "I'm Bernie Williams. When I recycle plastics, at home or at Yankee stadium, I place the shampoo bottles, juice and soda bottles, and plastic milk jugs into the blue recycling bins. I never, ever put plastic bags into the recycling bins that's like striking out with the bases loaded.") Athletes, broadway stars, comedians, and musicians, etc., could be recruited to donate their time for recording similar ads dealing with each separate segment of the waste stream.
