to return. There are times when a Catholic might believe that the church has been utterly despoiled of beauty at the hands of the new reformers. One can visit many new, expensive buildings, and find that there is little real beauty both within and without, and the craftsmanship and style is not at all condusive to prayer and things of the Divine Order. Thankfully, there are still places where the Catholic glory of old is preserved, even if these places are neglected or nearly abandoned. The Rochester Chapter of Una Voce America was privileged to travel to Buffalo, New York, on July 17th, 1999 to visit the city's beautiful Catholic landmarks. Our tour guide was Mr. Albert Huntz, President of Una Voce Buffalo, and through his skillful manuvering about the city, and his good knowledge of the churches, we were blessed to discover some hidden treasures of Catholic art and architecture. The images on this page were captured on our trip and they are posted here for the benefit of all, especially for those who have been deprived of the excellence of Catholic architecture through the destructive work of the new liturgical reform. Thanks to Mr. Gene Cherkis for providing these photos for viewing on the web. His love for the greatness of these churches is well-expressed in his photography

Henry J. Pratt
Preface by Ronald Brown
Beginning in the 1890s, the social gospel movement and its secular counterpart, the Progressive movement, set the stage for powerful church and city governance connections. Churches and Urban Government compares the governing styles of Detroit and New York from 1895 to 1994 and looks at the steps city-wide religious bodies took to advance and influence their communities and their local government. Emphasizing the role of Black churches, Henry J. Pratt examines how immigration, the Great Depression, and the Civil Rights movement all nurtured this developing link between religion and politics, helping churches evolve into leadership roles within these metropolitan centers. "There is simply no other work I know of that explores the connections of church federations and urban governance. The book offers new perspectives on urban politics and religion and politics . . . The use of archival material and personal interviews is refreshing and adds significantly to the book" —Frederick C. Harris, Director, Center for the Study of African-American Politics, University of Rochester. African American Life Series

Lake Blvd. Mahopac, New York 10541 Dear Father Brennan: It has come to our attention that there is an effort by several municipal leaders in your area to kill the Canada geese on the lakes in your area, because they consider them "pests". They are advocating killing the geese even though there are very successful non-lethal means of getting the geese to relocate. As a fellow believer in Jesus Christ, our Prince of Peace, we are asking you and your congregation to take a stand against the proposed killing in favor of non-lethal means of eliminating any potential geese problem. We need to be non-violence peacemaker examples for our communities. We believe that every single person in the Church is called upon to be a peacemaker. This is one of the principles that Jesus taught in His "Sermon on the Mount", as recorded in Matthew 5:9: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" (NASU).

About the Cardinal
St. Patrick's Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of New York, Edward M. Egan. It is the largest decorated gothic-style Catholic Cathedral in the United States and has been recognized throughout its history as a center of Catholic life in this country.
The Windows were made by renowned artists in Chartres, France; Birmingham, England and Boston Massachusetts. The great rose window is acknowledged to be the finest work designed by Charles Connick, the 20th century genius in stained glass window design..
  • The Cathedral seats about 2,200 people. The exterior length is about 405 feet; the width is 274 feet. The spires rise 330 feet from street level. The architect was James Renwick, an American. The Lady Chapel was designed by another American, Charles Mathews. The St. Michael and St. Louis altar was designed by Tiffany and Company. The St. Elizabeth altar was designed by Paolo Medici of Rome. The Archbishops of New York are buried in a crypt under the high altar. Their honorary hats, called galeros, hang from the ceiling over their tombs.

What is Shape Note Singing?
Shape note singing is a type of traditional American singing with roots extending back to the colonial period of American history, and even beyond. Religious music in the American colonies consisted mainly of psalm singing. Reports of that time decried the way music was performed, and reformers attempted various ways of improving congregational singing. Around the year 1800, William Little and William Smith of Philadelphia devised an ingenious method of notating music through the use of shape notes. The scale syllables then in use reflected the English roots of the new nation. The musical scale was sung to the syllables "fa sol la fa sol la mi fa", not the "do re mi" syllables we use today. Little and Smith assigned a triangular shaped note head to "fa", a round head to "sol", a square head to "la", and a diamond head to "mi". Through the use of the shape note system in Little and Smith's book

The Dutch Reformed Church was situated in the middle of the city’s main intersection from the 1650s to 1806. Previously, services had been held in a building owned by the Patroon . Enlarged about 1715, the Dutch church was the largest building in colonial Albany and was described by a number of visitors. The Dutch church clearly was colonial Albany's premier social institution! Staffed continuously by a European-born dominie or minister, the Albany Dutch church represented continuity with the past and stability. Its lay leaders or Deacons were the most prominent Albany businessmen and officials. Well-supported by these worthies, by more ordinary city people, and by those in the countryside until Reformed Churches were built in Schenectady , Kinderhook, Catskill, and Schaghticoke , the Albany Dutch Church also provided poor relief, buried the dead , sponsored missionary work among Native peoples, and often served members of other congregations whose houses of worship were less well-established. Regardless of ethnicity, most early Albany families received some needed service from the Dutch Church. The North Pearl Street Dutch church was opened in 1798 and replaced the old structure which was torn down in 1806. By that time, a
