The Cathedral of St. Vartan in new york City is a reconstruction of churches in Armenia that were built during the Middle Ages.

Armenian Cathedral
2nd Avenue @ E. 34th Street by Celeste Fay
[cfay@murray.fordham.edu] An Armenian Cathedral in New York St. Vartan Cathedral is the first cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church to be constructed in North America. It is located in New York City on the corner of Second Avenue and Thirty-forth street. It was built to resemble The Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin [or here for image], the world's first cruciform church, built in the fourth century and still standing in Armenia. St. Vartan's was consecrated on April 28, 1968 by His Holiness Vasken I, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all Americans.
The Architecture EXTERIOR The cathedral has an L-shaped composition framing an entrance court of 114 feet long by 72 feet wide. It is elevated five feet above street level. It is sheathed in limestone with one story granite base and exterior staircase. The main entrance faces a spacious plaza. The Design above the door to main entrance depicts images of Saint Vartan, the Brave. It is patterned after similar designs found on the exterior of the ancient Armenian Church on the island of Aghtamar in Lake Van. The image on the right depicts St. Vartan, receiving the blessing of His Holiness Catholicos Hovsep. The image on the left depicts his military and peaceful natures. The helmet at the left foot shows the military nature, and the animal on his right represents his peaceful nature.

[back to Medieval New York
Medieval Saints With New York City Churches (Alphabetical) By Paul Halsall As well as through architecture, Medieval Europe impinges on New York through the many churches dedicated to medieval saints. This is a listing of the saints [counting "medieval saint" as a saint who lived between 312 (the end of the Roman persecutions) until 1517 (the beginning of the Protestant Reformation).
All medieval saints have been included - Catholic, Orthodox and, in one case, Protestant.
I have also tried to suggest why particular medieval saints are commemorated in New York. Some were simply universally popular, others - I speculate, reflect the antiquarian concerns of educated Anglican clerics, but by far the commonest reason was that the saint was identified with some national grouping. In the case of Roman Catholic churches the practice of allowing non-territorial "national parishes" accentuated this type of naming choice. There never were "Irish national parishes", but the Irish so dominated the RC Church in New York that many territorial parishes functioned as Irish parishes.
Note that this is not a complete list of church dedications in New York. Biblical and early martyrs do not figure, nor do saints of the Counter-Reformation and after.

New York City Churches Continue September 11 Response
By Linda Bloom
Date: August 6, 2002 Nine months after the Sept. 11 attacks, Cheryl Holt-Andrews asked the children at the after-school program at Tremont United Methodist Church to write – or, if they were under 5, draw – about their feelings of the events of that day. She was horrified that, months later, the children still drew pictures of the World Trade Center's twin towers under attack by airplanes and engulfed in flames. "That had the most impact on me," she says. "The older children, they can talk about it; these (younger) children have been holding it in all this time." Tremont, in the Bronx, is one of the many United Methodist churches in New York City's five boroughs that are continuing to respond to people affected by the events of Sept. 11. The denomination's New York Annual (regional) Conference has allocated $1 million in grants to help fund local church programs. The conference received the money from the United Methodist Committee on Relief's " Love in the Midst of Tragedy " Sept. 11 fund-raising appeal.

TIPS on NEW YORK MOST POPULAR SIGHTSEEING SITES STATUE OF LIBERTY
Weekends are busier than weekdays. The best time to go is early in the morning. Take the first boat out if possible. Stay on the right side of the ferry boat for the best pictures as you approach the Statue of Liberty.
Another great picture: As the ferry boat leaves Manhattan, you will have a great view of the Manhattan skyline from the back of the boat.
Make sure you know when the ferry boat goes back to Ellis Island and the city and get on line a little earlier. Miss the boat and you have another 45 minute wait.
Utilize our special Drop-off and we will pick you up in our limo and drive you to Battery Park. CIRCLE LINE BOAT CRUISE AROUND MANHATTAN ISLAND
Sit on the left side of the boat to always face Manhattan. Excellent time to have a picnic (if you do not like hot dogs on a boat). Bring your sandwiches with you. EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
Best times to avoid the lines is early in the day or around 6PM (just when the city lights start coming up). The LIMOTOUR can get you discount tickets for the ESB and Skyride.

"The body is a unit though it is made up of many parts… If one part suffers every part suffers with it, if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it". 1 Corinthians 12: 12, 26-27
We Are The Body of Christ

When one part suffers we all suffer. World Vision wants to help your church serve those who suffer in your congregation and in your community by coming alongside you and enhancing your ability to serve them.
We can support a youth outreach worker at your church, or provide children and families in need with the basic necessities of life.
But the body of Christ is spread throughout the world, and many parts are suffering. World Vision wants to be a bridge to children and families in the poorest countries of the world , that your church may extend Christ's love to them. That they too may know the love of Christ.
Here are some ways we can work together:

  • Hope Sunday
  • Ministering to the Needs of your Congregation
  • Ministering to the Needs of your Community ...
