History
The heart of the steel making industry in Western New York has always been Lackawanna, N.Y. For this reason, the city has drawn to itself immigrants from all parts of the world, a mini League of Nations. The Poles began settling this town formerly known as West Seneca, just before the turn of the century, and by 1903 had set up a committee to petition the Bishop of Buffalo for a priest and the right to form a separate Polish parish. The Rev. Dr. Piotr Szulc again was called upon by the Diocese to organize still another Polish parish. Within months of formation, St. Barbara's committee along with Pastor Szulc purchased land on Caldwell Street and plans were drawn up to construct a combination church/school complex. In the spring of 1905, the finished building was blessed by Bishop Colton. That school year the Felician Sisters arrived to take charge of the students of St. Barbara's. In 1909, the State of New York incorporated the City of Lackawanna as a separate entity. A year later, St. Barbara's Parish was divided to accommodate those Poles living over the bridge, with the formation of St. Hyacinth Parish. Under the direction of Rev. Franciszek Radziszewski, pastor for eighteen years, plans were made to celebrate the parish's silver anniversary and then build a new house of worship, being completed in 1931.

http://www.geocities.com/innercityservant
Mission Statement: Breathing the Breath of Life into Broken Hearts of New York City. Vision: We seek to revive broken hearts through the Breath of Life
by allowing every breath, step, and action to be spent drawing
closer to Christ and compelling inner city New York to do the
same through community development, personal relationships, and life skills. In New Testament Greek, the word for Spirit (pneuma)
is also the word for wind and breath.
We want to be under the control of the pneuma of life.
Ultimately, the Spirit is in control of all we do.
Many illustrations are used in the Bible of
breathing life into what appears dead. We pray that the
people of New York City will be able to experience the
breath of life, which is his Spirit. Devotionals Newsletter Philosophy of Urban Ministry Pictures ... Sign Guestbook Email Login Password New users sign up Join the mailing list Enter your name and email address: Name: Email: Subscribe Unsubscribe

    Two 18th century churches

GEORGIA Jerusalem still an active congregation BY STEVE SCHOLAR S tanding amid a grove of oak and Georgia pine 30 miles north of Savannah, Ga., Jerusalem Lutheran Church is a microcosm of American history. Built between 1767 and 1769 by Lutherans whose families had been exiled 30 years earlier from Salzburg, Austria, for their religious beliefs, today it is home to the oldest active ELCA congregation. The "Salzburgers," as the immigrants were known, arrived in Savannah in 1734175 on four ships sponsored by the English "Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge." They settled on the banks of Ebenezer Creek and established the village of Ebenezer. But the soil was poor, and many lost their lives to famine and disease. Two years later they moved a short distance to the more fertile banks of the Savannah River and founded New Ebenezer. The Salzburgers held regular worship services and Sunday school classes and also founded the first orphanage in America, a sad necessity. But it was more than 33 years before the first brick of the church was laid. Visitors who look closely at the bricks can see several that still show distinct fingerprints of the men who made them from nearby red clay deposits. The 21-inch thick walls help keep the church cool during the hot and humid Georgia summers.
