Africans bring their churches to U.S. By Daniel J. Wakin
The New York Times E-mail this article Print this article Search archive Each Sunday, in more than 100 New York churches, pastors preach the Gospel in languages such as Ibo, Twi and Ga. Conga drums drive songs of praise. Swaths of kente cloth cover bodies swaying in the pews. An explosion of African-immigrant churches in the past 15 years has helped reshape religious worship in the city. The surge is creating oases of Christian faith for newcomers from Nigeria, Ghana, Congo, Ethiopia and other countries and fueling an evangelical movement long the province of Latinos and African Americans. "They're having an impact beyond the African church," said Tony Carnes, a sociologist of religion and a co-editor of "New York Glory: Religions in the City." "The African churches are bringing new vitality and new ways of doing things to African-American and other churches," said Carnes, a co-editor of "New York Glory: Religions in the City." As membership increases, the churches are growing more visible in their neighborhoods.

Join discussion at Wired New York Forum Subscribe for newsletter St. Nicholas Hellenic Orthodox Church was destroyed together with the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001. The church was located across the Liberty Street from the WTC towers, between the Washington and West Streets. See the map of the area The tiny church building was constructed around 1832. It originally was a residence and later housed a tavern before the founders of the parish purchased the structure. It measured 22 feet wide in front, 20 feet, 11 inches in the back, and about 56 feet long. It was 35 feet tall. On three sides it was bounded by a parking lot. Greek immigrants established St. Nicholas Church in 1916 and purchased the structure for $25,000. It was one of two old calendar parishes under the Archdiocese until 1993 when it switched to the Gregorian calendar. Among the church's unique characteristics were its small size and its icons, which were a gift from the last czar of Russia, Nicholas II. See larger picture St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on 20 May 2000.
