Thousands rally against New York education cuts
Demonstrators rally against the proposed education cuts Saturday in Albany, New York. Story Tools ALBANY, New York (AP) Thousands of teachers, administrators, parents, students and union leaders descended on the state capital Saturday to protest Gov. George Pataki's proposed education funding cuts. "We're here to tell the governor not to balance the budget on the backs of children," said Peter Giannone, 52, a high school business teacher. Giannone, who has been a teacher for 31 years, said he traveled from his Rocky Point home on Long Island to Albany because, as an economics expert, he knows there are better fiscal choices for the state. Organizers said the three-hour demonstration drew about 40,000 people, although state police said the crowd totaled between 12,000 to 15,000. Hoping to overcome an estimated $11.5 billion deficit without raising taxes, Pataki has proposed cutting school aid by $1.24 billion, leaving about $13.3 billion for public schools. Under pressure from teachers unions and school boards, the state Legislature this week restored hundreds of millions of dollars to education funding that would be cut under Pataki's budget plan.

Courting School Troubles

If the court takes over the schools in New York State, it will clearly mean that the Legislature has failed miserably. Honors for President Reagan Ronald Reagan was certainly among America's most important presidents, but Congress should not rush to alter American currency as a reaction to the passions of the moment. A Recall Vote in Venezuela With the opportunity for President Hugo Chávez to have his future decided at the ballot box, the chances of resolving Venezuela's crisis look considerably brighter.

How New York got safer schools
May 22, 1998 Web posted at: 10:38 a.m. EDT (1438 GMT) From Correspondent Peg Tyre NEW YORK (CNN) New York, like many other school districts around the nation, has grappled with finding ways to make its schools safer. There have been signs it has made progress in recent years. After a 1992 shooting in a Brooklyn high school left two students dead, New York's board of education ordered the installation of metal detectors in the city's schools. Police were also brought in to patrol 130 of the toughest schools. Teachers got special training, and students were taught conflict resolution. New York City also made it mandatory that anyone bringing a gun, knife or other weapon to school be expelled. But there is a big loophole in the mandate: you have to be 17 or older before you can be expelled. A 1992 Brooklyn high school shooting left two people dead The results of New York's efforts are difficult to measure.

    • THE GOOD FIGHT : Despite facing significant challenges to their charter school law, New York reformers can rest easy for a while as the legislative session ended with no changes that would have impeded this reform of choice in the Empire State. Charters' growing support has caused numerous challenges, such as reduced funding and a limit to further charter growth. Republicans and Democrats fought long and hard over these proposed changes but in the end, the House leadership was able to stave off additional challenges. Kudos go to Assemblyman Joe Bruno, who had the foresight to see that charter schools play a unique and positive role in educating his state's children. From CER Newswire June 24, 2003
