New York Due to demand and the fact that I now live in New York, we at NELSAP have decided to introduce lost New York areas to the site. New York is a huge undertaking in itselfwe estimate that there are approximately 200 lost areas in New York alone! That said, we will continue to focus on New England for the time being-we have an enormous amount of information to still add. We will add New York areas sporadically-we expect to do one or two a month. Once we feel New England is completed to the best of knowledge, we will shift focus not only onto to NY, but to areas in other states as well. If you have any information on lost areas in NY that you would like to share with us, email me . If you have information on any other lost ski area in the US or Canada, email Betsy . We will keep that info on file for future updates. Thank to all for being patientNELSAP has become bigger than I ever imaginedit's taken 3 years to get where we are now-imagine where we'll be in 3 more! The list below is but a few of what we will eventually add to NELSAP. Total Lost Areas in NY on NELSAP: 38 Adirondacks (6)

"When people come into my store," said Jack K., a gallery owner on Main Street and lifelong Pennington resident, "I can greet them by their first names, ask them how their kids are doing. I know what's going on in their lives." Column 2 Many Pennington residents commute to Manhattan or Philadelphia. There is no train station in town, however, and the closest station with service to New York, In Hamilton, is a 15-minute drive away. From there, it is more than an hour to Penn Station. The commute is much easier for workers driving to state office buildings In Trenton, Princeton University and large corporate facilities in the area, including Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merrill Lynch. Pennington is just far enough off the beaten path that its tiny downtown has not yet been discovered by the national chains. There is no Starbucks, no Gap. Drive-through fast-food restaurants are banned. There are, however, a bank, a drugstore, a cobbler, a pizza parlor, a hardware store, several gift shops and restaurants.

Celebrating its 75th year, The Gow School in South Wales, New York is an internationally renowned boarding school for young men, grades 7-12 with dyslexia or similar language based learning difficulties. The school is located on 100 acres of woodlands approximately 30 miles southeast of Buffalo, New York. The campus has twenty buildings, athletic fields, tennis courts, and a ski slope. The school provides a daily Reconstructive Language Program (a phonetic language program that focuses on oral reading, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary and written expression) and multi-sensory classroom presentation. Gow's solid college preparatory curriculum with a diverse fine arts and full interscholastic athletic program, focuses on a boy's talents while strengthening his academic foundations. Classes meet six days a week and are small in size, with a 5-1 student/faculty ratio, allowing an individualized program for students. In addition to regular classes, the last period of the day is set aside for individual students to work with their teachers on areas where they need extra help. Faculty members at Gow are specially trained in the teaching methods that are effective in helping dyslexic students succeed in the classroom. Each student spends two hours and fifteen minutes in a supervised study hall, Sunday through Friday. Teachers circulate throughout the session to help students concentrate, to answer questions and to support the discipline that our students must develop if they are to progress effectively in their studies. All honor scroll students may study in their dormitories. Some juniors and seniors study in their dorms if they maintain a strong grade point average.

The E-Rate is fostering greater parental involvement in children's learning.
The Stony Brook School, a private boarding school on Long Island New York, has found that the e-mail system has dramatically enhanced communications between teachers and parents, some of whom are hundreds or thousands of miles away. E-Rate and Communities As children become technology literate, parents are clamoring to catch up. The E-Rate spurs demand for and deployment of the Internet in communities across America.
In the small rural town of Bakersfield , Missouri, the Bakersfield R-4 School District was the first to get broadband connectivity and, because of the high cost of broadband services, the schools are the only institutions in the community able to afford it.

Updated March 24, 2003
Nominated for the Best Picture Oscar at the 2003 Academy Awards, director Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York brings to life 19th-century Manhattan's Five Points neighborhood. But what was it really like to live in what was once the world's most notorious slum?
View the Photo Gallery: Good-time girls swing from rafters in oversize canary cages, sword-slinging mobs rule the streets, and murder lurks in every corner. This is Manhattan's infamous Five Points slum, inhabited by Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, and Daniel Day-Lewis in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. But is it the real Five Points? Around 1888, men gather in the Five Points slum, the neighborhood depicted in Gangs of New York. See entire photo.

What is Troy All About?
Troy, a city of 55,000 people, is more than 200 years old. Located along the Hudson River in New York, Troy was a major center for the industrial revolution in the 1800's. It was the home of the detachable shirt collar, stove manufacturers, textile mills, stagecoach and carriage builders, breweries, bell manufacturers, iron and steel centers, and more. Iron plates for the Civil War ship the "Monitor" were rolled in Troy. Even Samuel Wilson, better known as Uncle Sam, lived and worked in Troy during this time. Most of Troy's buildings stand from the 18th and 19th centuries; fine homes of former industrial tycoons, worker and factory housing, and homes of the emerging middle class are still used and lived in today, many retaining their original character and features. Wood frame, terra cotta, brownstone, and brick houses line the streets of the city. Queen Anne, Mansard, Beaux Arts, Romanesque, Italianate, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and other kinds of buildings can be seen everywhere in Troy. Restoration is an ongoing event here. In fact, a section of downtown has received an impressive collection of art galleries and boutique shops. Here's a typical house in Troy under restoration (right). Troy has become the "restaurant district" of the capital region, and has many regular, popular events such as the summer's Riverfront Arts Festival with sidewalk chalk art competitions and the winter's Victorian Stroll, which includes events, music, crafts all around Troy's downtown, and the Hart-Cluett mansion decorated for a Victorian Christmas inside. Their research library is open, at no charge, to the public.

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS Al Gore lifts Howard Dean’s hand — and presidential hopes — as the former veep endorsed the former Vermont governor in Harlem yesterday. Howard Dean's reeling rivals struggled to regain their footing yesterday after the former Vermont governor landed Al Gore's powerhouse endorsement. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark even reached for Hillary Clinton's pastel pantsuit to pull himself up - saying he has not ruled her out as a running mate. Clinton, who spent Sunday telling the nation she's not jumping into the 2004 contest, quickly said it again. "She's going to fill out her full, six-year term," said Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines. The Democrat seen as the most wounded by Gore's surprise announcement tried to puton a happy face. "I've doubled my determination," said Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), Gore's running mate in 2000.

Working at Millbrook School
Faculty members at Millbrook School are teachers in all facets of their daily lives. Our faculty is committed to participating fully in the development of adolescents as whole people. Faculty members must be committed to one another as colleagues, and to the health of the community as a whole. Millbrook School’s faculty consists of approximately 60 members, most of whom live on campus. Our faculty is diverse in life experience, age, and race/ethnicity. We seek educators who have high energy, passion for the life of the mind, patience, flexibility, a sense of humor, and empathy and optimism towards the issues that our young people face. A faculty member at Millbrook School embodies the boarding school model known as the “triple threat.” Traditionally, this includes the roles of teacher, coach, and dorm parent. Each role requires energy and commitment to the unique life in a boarding school community. The following outlines most, but not all, of the job a Millbrook School teacher is expected to do. Teaching : A full-time faculty member will teach four sections per term as assigned by the department head and Dean of Faculty. The average class size is 13 students. Teaching faculty participate in weekly department meetings, collaborate with teachers in and outside of their department, and have a voice in decisions about the curriculum. In addition, faculty members will serve as academic advisor to one to six students per year and be responsible for supervising a community service.
