This course will examine four popular alternatives to traditional K-12 and postsecondary education in the United States. These are homeschooling, boarding schools, charter schools, and magnet schools. We will spend a couple of weeks constructing a conceptual framework for understanding these alternatives, and then spend a couple of weeks on each area. I have designed the course to be useful to both those with a focus on K-12 schooling and those more concerned with postsecondary education. Class activities will vary from day to day, ranging from lectures to open discussions to panel discussions to student presentations. Students will be active participants in the course. You are encouraged and expected to ask questions, raise issues, and otherwise contribute to classroom discussion. For the class to work effectively, all of the reading must be done on time. The reading load will vary somewhat from week to week, but regardless of the volume you should read everything carefully and critically. Your grade will be based on several short (3-5 pages) written assignments, a research paper, an oral presentation of this paper, and your overall participation. The instructor is under no obligation to accept late assignments. REWRITES may be handed in, too. Students are encouraged to submit these short, 3-5 page, written assignments electronically.

january 15, nEW york times article about TELAVI BOARDING HOUSE AND SCHOOL FOR ORPHANS AND ABANDONED CHILDREN Finally, a few months ago, when the cracked walls of the dormitory seemed about to burst, a foreign aid group hired someone to put metal bands around the building to hold it together. In the small, unheated rooms inside, there is a wool blanket on each of the wood cots, but no one has found the money to buy pillows. ''Everything is a problem for us,'' said an administrator here at the Telavi Boarding House and School for Orphans and Abandoned Children. ''When a window breaks, we don't know how to replace it.'' One of the children, Madona Pitskhelauri, 13, said that what she likes best is to watch television on the school's one set, but this is not very often because it costs too much to run the generator. Georgia is a country where cities are often dark at night because there is no electricity, where the winter air is sweet with wood smoke because there is no gas for heat, where low-paid teachers sell books at the roadside to earn a living.

Measles Outbreak in a Boarding School - Pennsylvania, 2003
Measles has not been endemic in the United States since 1997, although limited outbreaks continue to be caused by imported* cases ( ). In 2003, CDC assisted in investigating the largest school outbreak of measles in the United States since 1998 ( ). The outbreak consisted of 11 laboratory-confirmed cases: nine cases in a boarding school in eastern Pennsylvania and two epidemiologically linked cases in New York City (NYC). This report summarizes the results of the outbreak investigation, which indicated that measles continues to be imported into the United States and that high coverage with 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) among students was effective in limiting the size of the outbreak. Health-care providers should maintain a high index of suspicion for measles, especially in those who have traveled abroad recently, and recommendations for 2 doses of MCV in all school-aged children should be followed. In April 2003, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported to CDC two cases of measles in unvaccinated twins aged 13 years in a boarding school with 663 students. Active surveillance for measles was conducted in the school, hospitals, and doctors' offices through May 2003. Patients were interviewed, acute- and convalescent-phase sera were collected for measles IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay testing, and throat swabs and urine samples were collected for viral genotyping. Efforts to control the outbreak included vaccinating or excluding from campus and isolating all students and staff members with no evidence of immunity to measles

By JONATHAN FOREMAN Rating: November 16, 2001 HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE Remarkably faithful, consistently entertaining if overlong adapatation. Running time: 153 minutes. Rated PG. At the Lincoln Square, the Kips Bay, the Union Square, others. Adapting books for the screen is not easy to do well. It's even harder if fidelity to the original material is a major priority - and with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'' it was more of a priority than in any of Hollywood's biblical epics. But screenwriter Steve Kloves and director Chris Columbus have succeeded in making a movie of J.K. Rowlings' mega-bestseller that is almost as entertaining as it is amazingly faithful. No, it's not a great movie. Among other flaws, it's a half-hour too long. And, as some critics have grumbled, it neither looks like the work of a visionary director nor adds anything to the book. But there is virtue in that modesty. Realizing that the book (and the universe created by its author) do not require much adding to, and that it is filmable without sacrificing too much in the way of character or incident, the filmmakers took remarkable efforts just to get it right.

    Boarding Students @ Chop Point
The boarding program accepts a small number of students in grades 7-12 who will be made to feel at home and part of the family. Chop Point accepts International and U.S. students. Both a five-day and a seven-day a week program is offered to students for the academic year. Resident students do their own laundry and help a few hours a week in the cleaning of the home and the general maintenance of the property. We encourage good conduct through building genuine and warm relationships between staff and students. There is no value more important and basic to a happy and productive life than honesty. We will work patiently and kindly with those young people who break any of the few Chop Point policies if that student is sincere about putting things right. Depending on availability and preference, students live with families in boarding facilities on the property or nearby. Full-time boarding students (7-days a week) are involved in planning weekend social activities. Activities may include trips to Quebec City, New York City, the beaches of North Carolina, Washington D.C., Cape Cod, the White Mountains, and the Moosehead Lake region for ice fishing. Financial Information
Chop Point firmly believes it is offering an education superior to the public schools. We are accomplishing this task on a budget much smaller than that of the public schools because of the sacrificial attitudes of the teachers and staff.
