Emma Hart Willard Born: February 23, 1787
Place: Berlin, Connecticut
Died: April 15, 1870
Place: Troy, New York E I n 1814 Emma Hart Willard opened a boarding school for girls in her Middlebury home. Her purpose was to offer improvements in teaching methods and to offer subject areas to women that were missing from girls' schools of the day. Women's boarding schools at the time were usually "finishing schools", schools that offered young women (usually of wealth) skills of refinement, such as painting, singing, perhaps a bit of French, etc. Emma believed strongly that women could master other areas, such as political thought, mathematics, sciences, and philosophy, and she included these subjects in her curriculum. Emma Willard thought her ideas were important enough to influence a broader audience, so in 1818 she refined her ideas for improving women's education in a work titled A Plan for Improving Female Education . She presented the work to the New York legislature, but was not received whole-heartedly. Her plan included the proposal that a women's seminary be founded and supported publicly, as a number of men's institutions were run. She finally found an influential supporter in New York's Governor Clinton. The road was rocky, but the end result was the establishment of a seminary for women at Waterford, New York that received only meager support from the state. In 1823, Emma Hart Willard moved to Troy, New York, when the Troy town council established a fund to support a women's school. The Troy Female Seminary began a long tradition of educating women in fields such as mathematics, philosophy, geography, history, and sciences. She led the school to a position of success and influence as it became a model for the comprehensive education of women. Emma Hart Willard headed the institution until she stepped down in 1838 and left the school's leadership to her son.

O ne of the Parents League's most popular offerings, the School Advisory Service helps parents to successfully navigate their way through the admissions procedure for the New York City Independent Schools and Boarding Schools throughout the country. Parent's League advisors provide members with a "place to start" in their search for the right school for their child and acquaint them with the many varied options available.
The Parents League is affiliated with over 250 private schools around the country. Please view a full listing of our member schools
Whether the parent is seeking to place a young child or to make a change of school for an older child, advisors help demystify the admissions process and outline a reasonable procedure to follow. "One session with a specialist from their School Advisory Services is well worth the membership fee"
Newcomer's Handbook
Their advice aids parents in determining an appropriate number of schools to consider, utilizing parents preferences regarding school location, size single sex/coed student body, facilities, and philosophy. Advisors then describe the atmosphere and structure of schools which meet the parents expressed criteria and explain the relevant time lines for testing, applications and interviews.
Advisory sessions are available by appointment to Parents League members. Please call to schedule an appointment.

Residential Schools Indian Lawsuits on School Abuse May Bankrupt Canada Churches By JAMES BROOKE
New York Times
November 2, 2000 REGINA, Saskatchewan - Lawsuits filed by thousands of former Indian boarding school students in Canada, claiming sexual, physical and "cultural" abuse, threaten to swamp the financial resources of four mainstream Christian churches that ran the schools until 1970. "I simply see us going broke," Duncan D. Wallace, the Anglican bishop of Qu'Appelle, which encompasses Regina, said of his diocese. With resignation, he added, "When you get down to it, all we need is a bottle of wine, a book and a table, and we are in business." Settlements could snowball into billions of dollars, devastating the financial resources of Canada's four old-line Christian churches: Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian and United Church. By the end of next year, the Canadian government forecasts, 16,000 Indians will have entered some form of claim; that number is equal to 17 percent of the living alumni of the boarding schools. Already there are four class-action suits against the churches and the government, which had the churches run schools in distant communities under contract. Indian plaintiffs have won all five boarding school abuse trials held in the last two years - two in Saskatchewan and three in British Columbia. In the Saskatchewan cases, both involving sex abuse, and both filed against the government, one plaintiff won $54,000 and the other $114,000. In the British Columbia cases, lawyers for the government and the churches negotiated secrecy over damage awards.

It affords us much pleasure to call the attention of the American Israelites to the school of our valued friends, the Misses Palach of New York. Those who know us personally will acquit us of any propensity for over-praising; and consequently we trust that our approval of the plan of instruction of the above school, which we visited twice in the beginning of last November, will be deemed the honest effect of what we saw before us. The children not alone seemed to learn their tasks, but to feel pleasure in the instruction they received. Indeed it could not be otherwise; since the instructors themselves appeared more like the guides of their charges than armed with the usual magisterial authority and sternness, which are so apt to repel the tender minds of youth, and render the schoolmaster oftener dreaded than loved. The course of instruction includes writing, arithmetic, geography, astronomy, grammar, composition, philosophy, history, mythology, with all the branches of an English education.

By Eric Hubler If mobility is the core of the American dream, then there can be no better expression of the dream than A Better Chance, an educational program that celebrates its 35 th anniversary this year. ABC plucks gifted minority students from poorly financed public schools and places them in boarding schools or public high schools in wealthy suburbs. Almost all the other students in these schools are white and rich, so the ABC students are forced to confront uncomfortable issues of their being different at just the point in their lives when teenagers seek comfort in sameness. And Mr. Principal further complicates and enriches his biography by bringing Wall Street to the old neighborhood. His 100-odd clients call him on an "800" number and probably imagine a Park Avenue office suite, but Mr. Principal runs Principal Capital Management out of the brick row house that his mother, Myrienne Jasmin, owns in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. That gives him the financial flexibility to chip in toward the repair of a fire-damaged rental property she owns in Crown Heights. Arnold Principal is nostalgic for the days when "you could go to the corner store without getting shot by a cop"—a nearby market, the Milky Way, was the scene of a police shooting last Christmas. But he is probably the least qualified person to judge how safe the streets of his own neighborhood were because he was rarely allowed on them: the Principal children were under strict orders to return home immediately after school.

"An education largely comes from inside out. No one gives you one. You make one. Schooling is just the reverse."
John Taylor Gatto says schools are "incubators of disease." He says they are hideous, horrible places that destroy the mentality and the character of students, leaving them crippled and incomplete.
    He's not anti-education, he's anti-school.
Gatto taught in the public schools of Manhattan for 30 years. He was named New York state teacher of the year, and New York City teacher of the year three times. He has written four books on education and has spent the last decade travelling across the United States, Canada and other countries to speak about education reform.

Children and Cognition : The Nash Family Foundation of New York has announced a grant to train 125 Jewish day school educators in new teaching techniques to identify and correct cognitive problems in children before they mushroom into unmanageable classroom difficulties. The grant is to benefit educators from day schools across the country. The teachers will attend a workshop program, "Schools Attuned," through the All Kinds of Minds Institute , a Chapel Hill, N.C.-based educational organization that promotes the work of University of North Carolina researcher Mel Levine . The teachers will take workshops about eight neurodevelopmental constructs of learning Mr. Levine has identified, such as attention, memory and language, and how to zero in on problems. "The process is called 'attuning a student,'" said Anna Lobianco of the All Kinds of Minds Institute. "We then demystify the student as to the problems." The teacher works with parents and other teachers to recognize the cognitive source of a student's difficulty, and to correct it. Ausperger's Class MATAN , a New York-based organization that helps Jewish children with learning disabilities, is offering a basic Judaism class for children with Ausperger's syndrome, a type of high-functioning autism, at the East Brunswick, N.J., Jewish Community Center. The class, which is to serve as a model for others, is expected to lead to a bar or bat mitzvah class for the children. MATAN was established in 2000 to teach educators special-education techniques and counsels rabbis on how to help learning-disabled students prepare for bar or bat mitzvah.
