101. The Crafts Report: Editor's Journal
to everyone in the crafts field to realize that while the economic struggle is universal in scope, many artists are busy mapping ways to succeed in a new year.
http://www.craftsreport.com/february03/EditorsJournal.html
This month, the 2003 winter craft show season kicks into high gear with the wholesale shows on the East Coast. We are looking forward to seeing old and new faces at these events during February in New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Some exhibitors at the summer shows in the same venues, as well as at retail shows around the country, complained of fewer buyers and slower sales than in previous years. However, since we usually visit with craft artists during lulls in sales activity, we thought we might have gotten an overly negative version of those shows. We think readers will find their plans as well as their thoughts about the crafts industry in general to be very enlightening. One thing is certain: artists at all levels and all points in their crafts careers found 2002 a difficult one financially. It should be encouraging to everyone in the crafts field to realize that while the economic struggle is universal in scope, many artists are busy mapping ways to succeed in a new year. This month we also present the first installment of a two-part article on payroll taxes by business writer J. Tol Broome Jr. We think his clear and detailed review of this complex subject will be helpful to artists with one employee or many. And, in her Business Wise column, Mary Stope gives us an inside look at the world of permanent wholesale showrooms. Artists who have never attended a wholesale show may be surprised to realize there are wholesale outlets for their work all year round and right in their own state.

Peninah, like 250 other Bene Israel Jews, lives on the Konkan coast, a four-hour drive south of Mumbai, India. Due to rough seas during the Monsoon season (July – October) there are no ferries from Mumbai to the secluded and impoverished village of Rewdanda. It is only accessible this time of year via a four-hour drive along a treacherous road. Because of this, the Jewish community that lives in Rewdanda is often cut off from the rest of the community and the Jewish world, especially during Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Peninah and the others though were not forgotten this past High Holiday season. For over ten years JDC has provided a social worker to the Kokan villages. Refy, a JDC social worker, carries on the effort by visiting the deprived Jews in Rewdanda and the other villages along Konkan coast to make sure that they have their basic needs taken care of, including medicine. During the month of September two JDC Jewish Service Corps (JSC) volunteers, Yitzhak and Julieta, joined Refy on his visit and together they conducted a High Holiday seminar. The seminar, held at a synagogue (built in 1842) in Rewdanda, was aimed to educate this isolated Jewish community on the subject of Jewish High Holidays. Thirty people attended and learned about the Rosh Hashana celebration, the Shofar , Yom Kippur Repentance, and the importance of all Jewish communities around the world feeling a part of

Many facets would be used to ease Allison-like effects
    By TODD ACKERMAN
Only a multiplicity of well-coordinated projects can prevent the crippling effects of another Tropical Storm Allison-like flood, says a 42-point master plan released today by the Texas Medical Center. The plan, which mostly pulls together existing proposals and projects, calls for improvement at four scales individual Medical Center institutions, the Medical Center campus, the South Main Street district area and the entire Brays Bayou watershed and participation by government and other players. It would take 10 years to fully implement. "Nothing can prevent the damage from a 500-year or more flood, but this would certainly mitigate those effects. But it will take a large number of steps."

Koreans have a centuries-old history of paper-making and have long enjoyed using high-quality indigenous paper.
Korea's oldest paper, called maji, was made from hemp. Maji is produced using roughly the following process:
Scraps of hemp or ramie cloth are soaked in water for some time and then shredded into tiny pieces. These pieces are ground in a grindstone to produce a slimy pulp, which then is steamed, cleansed with water, ground and placed in a tank. This raw material is pressed onto a frame and sun-dried while being bleached. This method of papermaking was most popular during the Three Kingdoms period (57 B.C.-A.D. 668).
In Baekje (18 B.C.-A.D. 660), one of the Three Kingdoms, paper thus made served as a chief medium for documenting historical events in the second half of the fourth century. Notably, Damjing, a Korean Buddhist monk and painter of Goguryeo (37 B.C-A.D. 668), another of the Three Kingdoms, introduced techniques of papermaking to Japan in 610, the 21st year of Goguryeo's King Yeongyang. From all this, it is obvious that Korea had already developed an advanced method of papermaking by the early part of the seventh century.
In the Goryeo era (918-1392), Koreans began to make paper from mulberry bark, or dangnamu, which made it possible to produce paper in large quantities, and in the 11th century, Korea began exporting paper to China. Between the 23rd year (1145) of King Injong's reign and the 18th year (1188) of King Myeongjong's reign, mulberries were grown all over the Korean Peninsula as the private paper manufacturing industry became a thriving business. The Government encouraged papermaking by setting up a jiso, an administrative agency designed exclusively to promote the production of mulberry paper. Eventually, Goryeo succeeded in producing fairly thick and sturdy paper whose obverse and reverse sides are both quite smooth and glossy. In later years, Korea's papermaking techniques further advanced, leading to the production of hanji, a traditional Korean paper.

With four children I don't get much time anymore for crafts but at least once a week I like to sit down and relax, and do some cross stitching or knitting. I like to think it keeps me sane and that it is the only thing in my house that stays the same when I've done it (unlike housework J Currently I am cross stitching the Millennium Sampler by StitchWorld for my oldest son Jonathon. It really suits him, he's into learning about other countries and explorers. Just before midnight on New Years eve 1999, I got him to put the first stitch on, in a slightly different colour so he could see it. Already he is proudly pointing 'his' stitch out to anyone whose interested! It's only taking me nearly three years to do so far. Then I'll do the Celestial Navigation picture in the same booklet for my 5 year old son Alex. This picture reminds me of the flying ship in Peter Pan! One of Alex's favourite movies. I finally finished Paula Vaughan's Good Neighbours! I am sooo pleased with it! This was the picture that Alex, when he was only 2 years old, scribbed on the back of it with a pen. I'm too scared to wash it now as the ink might run. But I love this picture! When Jonathon saw it completed, he said it reminds him of the Anne of Green Gables movie, which I am thrilled about because the Anne of Green Gables series of books are some of my favourite books. Unfortunately I'll have to save some money to have it properly framed. It is a big picture, so I can't buy a frame from a shop and put it in myself. And after all the work (2 and a half years!) I would love to have it properly framed like they have it on the brochure.

Christmas Around The World
A Mother's New Year's Resolutions
by Sabrina Altman
In the past, making New Year's resolutions was a fun exercise in self-analysis, often a time to laugh at myself as I catalogued my foibles. Now that I'm the mother of an infant daughter, I'm putting a little more thought into my resolutions for the coming year. Here's a short list of one mother's New Year's resolutions:
  • Smile at my reflection in the mirror. I'm not a supermodel and I don't play one on television. In order to model a positive self-image, I resolve to stop sneering at myself in the mirror and believe my husband when he tells me I'm beautiful. Eat well-balanced meals and forget fad diets. A box of Captain Crunch Berry cereal is not an acceptable dinner. In order to model healthy eating habits, I resolve to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and an occasional piece of chocolate cake. Be a smart shopper. Writing the shopping list while picking items off the store shelves is not the way to thrifty heaven. In order to model good spending habits, I resolve not to buy a lot of knick-knacks because I am bored.
