Built his own monoplane in 1910
Ludvik Ocenasek was born into a poor mining family in Czechoslovakia in 1872. He taught himself to be a mechanic and while working at that trade, succeeded in completing his education in a middle vocational school. At the age of 22, after working in a patent office, he opened his own machine shop in Prague, which in time grew into a medium sized industrial plant.
Creativity marked his entire life, from the merry-go-round he designed and constructed at the age of 8 to the new recoil device for firearms for which a patent was awarded to him two days after his death on August 10, 1949.
In 1905, Ocenasek designed and built an aeronautical rotary engine similar to the famous French Gnome airplane engine. In 1910, he built a monoplane powered by his 50 horsepower rotary engine, and on November 30, 1910, he attained a maximum flight distance of almost 100 feet.

Bridges Project for Education is a small educational nonprofit dedicated to sending low-income minority and first generation students to college or vocational school and providing first year support for success. Taos County citizens and educators had noticed the low number of college graduates in Northern New Mexico and responded by creating the Bridges Project in 1997. The Project assists clients through four programs:
  • One-on-One College Counseling College Summita four-day workshop which educates students on the possibilities a college education presents Centinel Bank ACT Prep Workshops and Essay-Writing Workshops College Tours
As a MIRA CSO, the Bridges Project proposed using technology to establish a needed presence in three locations in Taos County. At each of these ScholarShops an outreach coordinator would implement weekly, ongoing programs using computers, software, and the library curriculum in three Taos County Schools. The ScholarShops will act as technology centers containing computers, printers, software, library materials, phone access and an Internet connection. Students and parents will have access to this technology. The Bridges Project hoped that the MIRA grant would be used to establish these satellites so well they would become self-sufficient within a year.

SOCORRO, N.M., February 15, 2000 "What's in a name?" For people who are already familiar with it, the name "New Mexico Tech" invokes certain images and notions of what the state-supported research university is really like.
However, to individuals who are less familiar with New Mexico Tech many of whom may be potential students the name "New Mexico Tech" often suggests a whole range of inaccurate, and often negative, preconceptions of the type of education the school provides or of what the institution actually is.
