62. Northern New Mexico Community College History
The school s title was changed from the Northern new mexico Normal School inthe 1950 s to the new mexico Technical vocational School (NMTVS) in 1970.

Northern New Mexico Community College's 25 Year History: At A Glance By Gino T. Brazil / Public Information Office / gbrazil@nnmcc.edu
The presence of the college's "architects and builders" - the keynote speaker, three former regents, the school's first president, a key legislator, several staff and faculty who had been with the college since its birth - weren't meant to steal any thunder from the 150 plus graduates special day.
Simply, Northern officials wanted the graduates to see and meet some of the individuals who, through the past 25 years, had helped make it possible for them to graduate with a two-year degree or certificate from an accredited community college.
That message was amplified in Joseph Abeyta, Jr.'s, keynote commencement address.
"This school was founded on the principle that higher education should be made available to the people of northern New Mexico," said Abeyta, one of Northern's first regents and current Santa Fe Indian School superintendent. "Those sitting here today - Frank Serrano, Dennis Salazar, Nick Salazar - and all the others saw that people from this area should not have to travel to Albuquerque or Las Cruces for a degree in higher education. These people contributed to the infrastructure - the building of Northern New Mexico Community College.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

Higher graduation rates, less violence, a sense of belonging instead of alienation: the case for small schools is supported by mountains of evidence and a growing number of innovative models. National Center for Education Statistics The Education Trust Education Week has a section School Finance Issues New Mexico's school funding formula has long been considered one of the most equalized in the nation. A state will tend to have more equalized funding when several conditions apply: a) the state takes on a larger share of the funding (as opposed to when individual school districts raise the majority of funds through property taxes); b) states target their funding to poorer districts, and; c) states take into account regional differences in the cost of education (for instance, it is more expensive to educate a child in New York City than in Plattsburgh.) Until 1997, the state of New Mexico contributed about 74 percent of school funds. In 1997 the legislature passed a revised school funding formula (S.B. 100), increasing the share of funds to around 84 percent and targeting more of these funds to at-risk students. Money raised in individual school districts may go towards construction and maintenance, but not for school operating costs.
