School of Education at New Mexico Highlands University
The School of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
The Mission of the School The School of Education at Highlands carries forward a long-standing tradition of teacher education that dates back to 1893. We, therefore, are committed to providing experiences and knowledge to students seeking a degree or licensure in education. The School of Education also promotes continuous personal and professional scholarly development activities and graduate work to achieve lifelong learning. We subscribe to the philosophy that views optimal living as a function of the personal ability to pursue a meaningful life in work, leisure and home, while respecting, tolerating and valuing all people. Resources and Facilities A School of Education (SOE) resource is the regional collaboration between New Mexico Highlands University and the Northern New Mexico Network for Rural Educators. This collaborative effort identifies professional development needs, seeks to match resources to needs, and provides a forum for school districts to discuss staff development issues. The school also hosts the Northeast Regional Center Cooperative. The School of Education (SOE) also has a micro-teaching laboratory where students in Secondary Education are videotaped conducting instructional sessions. An after-school reading program utilizes the School Reading Laboratory for local school children, which provides practical experiences for students in Elementary Education, Reading, and Curriculum and Instruction programs. In addition, the SOE has an on-site Child Development Center with educational programs for infants and preschool age children. The Child Development Center provides practicum and field work experience for students in Early Childhood Education, as well as for other university programs.

Have you been hit by the MSBlast/LovSan/SoBig/Dumaru worm or other viruses?
Here are some tips on how to fix it.
Certification and Teacher Training for ESL,EFL,TESOL
There are schools and programs offering TESL/TEFL certification popping up everywhere. From one-day workshops to full-fledged Master's and PhD/EdD programs, you can see there's quite a range of training available. So what do you pick if you want to get a teaching job, and what educational or certification path is right for you?
Sadly, there's not an easy answer to that. (You knew I'd say that, didn't you?) The "paper" you need (whether it be a college degree, a course or seminar diploma, or a certificate) will depend on the job you want, the location of that job, and the skills required by the employer. Yes, you can find a job teaching English in some countries without a certification. Korea, for example, only requires a Bachelor's degree and it can be in any subject. Some people have managed to find jobs in other countries without even a college degree, although many of them ended up working "under the table," that is to say, illegally, so that's not the best idea.
The real question you need to answer is, what do YOU want to do, and where do YOU want to teach? Once you've answered that question, you're off to a good start. Want to teach English overseas in, say

Reciprocal Certification
All of the programs in teacher education at UM are fully accredited and lead to teacher certification in the State of Maryland , which is reciprocal in most other states. A listing of the states with which we have reciprocity is provided below: NOTE: The listing in the table below is taken from the NASDTEC website, http://www.nasdtec.org/report.tpl Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Massachusetts Michigan Mississippi Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wyoming Dictrict of Columbia NOTE: Several of these states require prospective teachers to meet additional ancillary requirements (e.g., additional teacher candidate assessments and/or courses, higher GPA requirement, etc.) in order to be fully certified. In many cases, the incoming teachers are issued an initial certificate, which enables them to begin teaching, and they are given a specific time line for fulfilling any remaining teacher certification requirements. For further information about a particular state, contact that state's Office of Teacher Certification. (This state listing is subject to change without notice.)

Are Alternative Certification Programs a Solution to the Teacher Shortage?
by Leslie Dahlkemper
Francisca Ramirez-Sorenson says teaching runs in her family. Her mother was a teacher, as was her grandmother. But until a year ago, Ramirez-Sorenson was on a different career path - one that made use of her master's degree in anthropology. "I was not going to be a teacher under any circumstances," she recalls. "But I think I was born with certain talents." In September, Ramirez-Sorenson was certified as a teacher. The route she took to the front of the classroom, however, is different from the traditional four-year college program. She is a graduate of the Houston Independent School District's Alternative Certification Program - the first district-based program of its kind in the country. This year-long program prepared her well for the classroom, says Ramirez-Sorenson. "They taught us a great deal about child development, child psychology, strategies for teaching, and how to encourage children to learn. They also taught us how to work with foreign students - and the cultural shock they might go through when they come here - and how to help them."

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman today announced that the U.S. Forest Service will consolidate its budget operations in Albuquerque, bringing an estimated 300-400 jobs to the state by spring 2005.
Currently, the Forest Service has about 150 budget offices throughout the country, which has led to inefficiencies and inconsistencies in the agency's budgeting process. The Forest Service last year decided to move towards consolidating its budget operation, and eventually narrowed down the potential sites to a handful of cities. The Forest Service today called Bingaman's office to confirm that Albuquerque had been selected. The formal announcement will be made by the Forest Service in the coming days.
"The move to streamline the Forest Service's budget office into a single operation makes a lot of sense from a good-government perspective. The fact that Albuquerque will gain as many as 400 jobs is a major bonus. It says a lot about the character this city and the state that we were selected for this national operation," Bingaman said.

Every state has its own requirements, so your first step should be to talk to your state Board of Education and find out what your state's specific certification requirements are. While requirements vary by state, all states do require:
  • A bachelor's degree Completion of an approved teacher training program A prescribed number of subject and education credits Supervised practice teaching
  • One cool thing about certification: as of 2000, 39 states (plus the District of Columbia) have an agreement that permits certification reciprocity. This means that if you get certified in one of those 39 states, your certification counts for all 39 states. These states include: Alabama
    Arkansas
    Arizona
    California
    Colorado
    Connecticut
    Delaware
