Introduction New Mexico has a portfolio of incentives that has been developed to encourage the creation and expansion of high quality job opportunities across the state. Certain incentives target specific industry sectors, such as technology, or regions within the state. Others support businesses in training their workforce, in research, or purchasing capital equipment. Here are the most significant incentives New Mexico offers:
  • Training a Productive Workforce - The $18m Job Training Incentive Program (J-TIP), one of the nation's most aggressive, supports customized workforce training that can be classroom-based, on-the-job, or a combination of both. The program can fund assistance of up to 1,040 hours per trainee. Supporting Business Investment - Communities are not only investing in 21st century infrastruc-ture - transportation, advanced communications, plant - but are also able to issue Industrial Reve-nue Bonds to exempt companies from property taxes on land, equipment, buildings and equip-ment. In many cases the IRB is also used as a funding vehicle. Investing in the Future of New Mexico - The Invest New Mexico program, instituted by Gover-nor Richardson, has several components, of which the most significant are:

N ew Mexico, although it is over 1000 kilometers from the nearest plate tectonic boundary (the San Andreas fault in California), is a moderately seismically active region, with earthquakes occurring in most parts of the state. The Socorro area has been the most seismically active portion of New Mexico during at least the past 100 years, and the largest documented earthquakes in New Mexico's history ocurred near Socorro in 1906.
  • Click on the New York Times headline to see the 1906 newspaper reports of the large earthquakes of July, 1906.
  • T he 1906 earthquakes near Socorro were strongly felt as far away as El Paso, TX and Las Vegas, NM. A scientific study of these earthquakes by H.F. Reid (who also did fundamental research on the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake) was published in the first issue of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (1911). The intensities contoured on the map are estimates of maximum ground acceleration, which ranged from III (about 1% of acceleration due to gravity) near El Paso to VIII (about 25% of acceleration due to gravity) near Socorro.

Note. Existing knowledge dies not in general permit the inference that thermal waters may be found everywhere within the depicted areas, nor do the boundaries represent certain knowledge of the areal extent of the geothermal systems. The areas digitized by the INEEL from the 1980 New Mexico map were modified by James C. Witcher prior to finalizing the INEEL map. Purpose: Provides a visual representation of existing geothermal resources and potential areas for residential and commercial direct use applications. This data layer is shown on a map in conjunction with land ownership and spring and well temperatures.
