    Featured Photographer Jim Hunter
The tops of Tent Rocks near Cochiti Pueblo pierce the sky. Jim Hunter has worked for newspapers and magazines and has photographed subjects as diverse as federal judges and lingerie models. Jim has also worked as an assistant to Kirk Gittings, one of the top commercial and architectural photographers in the southwest. From wildlife and nature photography to studio still lifes, from landscapes to architecture and from sports to fashion and fine art nudes, Jim's work has ranged the spectrum. Since 1984 Jim has been a full-time freelance photographer specializing in location photography for editorial, corporate and advertising clients where he works to blend a strong sense of color and design into a graphic visual image. His style can range from the photojournalistic to the abstract and from editorial to fine art. Jim's work is the never-ending search for moments in time; the moment warm, late afternoon sunlight perfectly illuminates the ruins of an ancient Native American pueblo, or the moment when the expression on a face gives up something of the personality within. Steve and I have lived in Santa Fe since 1990. We LOVE Santa Fe. It is a small enough town (50,000 population, 70,000 for the county), but has lots going on because it is a popular tourist town. Summers can get a bit overrun with tourists but it is still a nice time here.
    Weather
This is a high altitude mountain town. Think more like Colorado than southern Arizona. Snow in winter, late springs, lovely summers, lovely autumns. It is usually cold at night, even in the summer. 300 days of sunshine a year!! The best time to visit is May, June, August, September, October. Spring : The irises and lilacs come out in May. Trees bloom then too. Our first planting date is June 15 - you can get frost at night up until then. Apricot trees bloom in April, but the buds are frequently killed by a late frost or even snow. May and June are perfect months. Cool at night, 70s - 80s during the day. Summer : July can be hot. In 2003 it was in the upper 90s for a month. This is unusual - usually it is only that hot for a week or two. The monsoon season starts late July, into August. It will be beautiful all day long, but then cloud over late afternoon with big lightening storms, rain and even hail. End of August and September are perfect weather.

Imagine descendants of Jews pursued by the Spanish Inquisition, still tending the dying embers of their faith among peasant Latinos in the American Southwest. The story has obvious resonance, and it has garnered considerable publicity. The truth of the matter may turn out to be vastly different, and nearly as improbable by Barbara Ferry and Debbie Nathan HE telling has become almost stylized through repetition. In the mid-1980s a number of people with Spanish surnames began stealing into an office in Santa Fe, peering over their shoulders, shutting the door behind them, and whispering that their neighbors were engaging in strange customs that were decidedly out of place in the region's overwhelmingly Catholic culture. Soon those reports would lead to proud testimonials from southwesterners of Iberian descent claiming kinship with Jewish victims of the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal. And not just genetic descent: some of these people would say that though outwardly they were raised as Christians, their parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents were secretly observant Jews. Such stories are now so common in the Southwest that almost everyone takes them at face value. Discuss this article in the More on politics and society in The Atlantic Monthly and Atlantic Unbound.
