New Mexico
Land of Enchantment
Blessed with a varied landscape of lush forests, arid deserts, rolling plains and soaring mountain ranges, New Mexico enjoys a scenic diversity unmatched in most states. No less diverse is the state's culture, a mosaic of Native American, Spanish and Anglo traditions that intermingle but never blend, much like the land around them. From ancient ruins of the Anasazi to the atomic testing ranges at White Sands, New Mexico is as distinctive as its rich cultural heritage.
New Mexico's Historical Timeline:
1500 BCE - 1200 CE-
Mogollon Indians live in the valleys in houses dug partly into the ground. They later build villages above the ground. Cliff-dwelling Anasazi build many-storied apartment houses of closely fitted stones.
The Anasazi disappear abruptly as severe drought and invasion by the nomadic, aggressive Apache splinter the ancient culture into smaller tribes. Navajo and Apache tribes move in from the north. Utes and Comanches come a few years later. Cabeza de Vaca enters the area from Texas. 4 men reach the headquarters of the Spanish government in Mexico. They are the sole survivors of the 500-man Narvaez expedition sent from Spain to explore the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. One of the men is Estevan (or Estevanico), a black man. His and de Vaca's stories of Cibola, or the "Seven Cities of Gold" induce the Spanish governor to send an expedition to search for the treasure.

The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization which serves as the binding force and communication hub for its member schools. The purpose, as put forth in its Constitution, is to promote the common interest of all members and to advance their welfare; promote and maintain high scholastic, military and ethical standards in member schools; represent the mutual interests of the member schools before the Department of Defense as well as the general public; foster and extend patriotism and respect for duly constituted authority; and cultivate citizens who love peace and who strive to maintain it. Regular membership is extended to essentially military schools which have a member of the armed services detailed or approved by the Department of Defense, and which maintain good standing in their regional accrediting organization. (An "essentially military" school is defined as an institution with military programs approved by one of the military services and which organizes its student body as a cadet corps, with students habitually in uniform and continually under military discipline while under the jurisdiction of the college or school.) Associate membership may be granted to schools offering a military program but which do not otherwise qualify for regular membership.

Albuquerque, New Mexico:
Speak out for academic freedom
"The message is this: Censorship is appropriate, and open debate and dialogue should be excluded from classrooms." By Eric Haas and Jama Fisk
Albuquerque Tribune
May 20, 2003 Teachers who encourage debate about the war with Iraq are being mistreated at local schools, today's writers say. Haas is a lawyer, former teacher and doctoral candidate in education policy. Fisk is a lawyer. Both Haas and Fisk live in Albuquerque. Citizens of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and all of New Mexico should be deeply concerned, if not mortified, by actions school administrators have taken against local teachers and counselors. These actions have placed academic freedom in jeopardy and have created an atmosphere of fear and repression in our schools. Through their silence, the school boards in these communities are condoning these actions. Geoff Barrett, a teacher at Albuquerque's Highland High School, was suspended after refusing to remove student-made artwork expressing views on the recent U.S. war against Iraq. The artwork was completed as part of an optional assignment in Barrett's Contemporary Issues class.

Hachita, New Mexico

The name Hachita was derived from the Spanish word “hacha” meaning small axe or hatchet. The reason this name was applied to this region of southern New Mexico is unknown, but the word is used to name several geographical features in the area in both English and Spanish variations. Big Hatchet Peak, Little Hatchet Mountains, Hachita Valley are a few examples.
Prior to the arrival of the railroads in the Hachita valley, ranchers sparsely populated the area. Their cattle grazed in the abundant grasslands of the valley. A few mining settlements appeared around the 1870’s in the Little Hatchet Mountains to the west and in the Apache Hills to the east with the discovery of turquoise, gold and silver in the area. Bands of Apache Indians frequented this desolate region and ranchers and miners were under constant threat of attack.
The El Paso and Southwestern had planned for this town to be just a water and coaling stop and built a siding and the facilities for this. The Lordsburg and Hachita designed a station, maintenance yards, an engine house and housing for several employees. Both railroads shared these facilities. Most of the railroad’s facilities were located on the north side of the tracks. The main street running east / west through town just south of the El Paso and Southwestern tracks was officially named Railroad Avenue, but everyone called it Main Street. Businesses and private residences were located on the south side of Main Street.

A breeze blows through the paneless windows and weeds grow where there once was a playground. This school at Claunch , New Mexico was once a symbol of the 1930s and the efforts of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to bring the United States out of the Great Depression. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was one of the programs begun in order to put many of the 15,000,000 unemployed people to work. They were builders of schools, court houses, museums, dams, river walks, sidewalks, curbs, buildings for organizations, parks and playgrounds. Paid $18.75 a week by the government, they worked long hours. Some of the projects have been used continuously since their construction and remain, exteriorly, the same. The Mountainair Municipal Auditorium is one basically unchanged inside and out. The interior is unusual in that tree trunk pillars support the balconies and roof. Others have been remodeled or their uses changed. Others have fallen into disrepair and have been abandoned like the school at Claunch, a mere dot on State Highway 55 between Mountainair and Ancho We (my husband is my chauffeur) began our research with Ft. ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (CNN) Federal agents plan to serve a search warrant Monday at an explosives training school in the desert near Roswell where, authorities say, a Canadian national trained Arab students to use shoulder-launched missiles and other explosives. David Hudak, 41, was arrested last week on federal explosives and immigration charges, said Special Agent Tom Mangan of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. A criminal complaint was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque. CNN NewsPass VIDEO U.S. agents say Arab students were taught to use shoulder-fired missiles at a private facility in New Mexico. CNN's Carol Lin reports (August 18) Play video Hudak, from Canada, ran the school in the southeastern New Mexico desert, where students from the United Arab Emirates and Yemen were taught how to use high-powered explosives.

Mexico is Now the Country Which Sends the Greatest Number of Forces to United States Military Schools
La Jornada
August 16, 1998 Between 1996 and 1999, 3200 members of Air Transportation groups of the Special Forces (GAFE) of the Mexican Army "will take two-week courses with the 7th Group of the Special Forces of the United States," in order to then return to Mexico to train "rapid response" units," noted Darrin Wood, European expert on Latin American military affairs. Citing information from the US newspaper, The Washington Post, he said Mexican officials will be accompanied in these courses by the same Green Berets who were in El Salvador in the 80's, during the confrontations with the insurgent guerrillas. Wood notes that the campaigns carried out by independent organizations - national and foreign - against this training in military centers in the United States, do not seem to have affected the image of President Ernesto Zedillo's government, to such a degree that, now, "with zedillismo (sic), Mexico has more members of their armed forces receiving training than any other country in the world." In his analysis he indicates the kind of influence US officials have on Mexican military personnel, and he notes that it has to do with United States interests in Latin America.
