Well, I was born in El Paso, Texas, it was in the nearest hospital to the family farm. When I was three days old my mother took me home and I was raised in southern New Mexico, below Los Cruces, above El Paso. I was a typical farm boy. I liked the farm. I enjoyed the things that you do on a farm, go down to the drainage ditch and fish, and look at the crawfish and pick a little cotton. Although I never was a terrific cotton picker, you understand. I had a horse, always, and I'd ride the horse in the summertime, sometimes bare back gentle horse, you understand. Go out in the corn patch, pick some corn. You really get the most out of sweet corn if you pick the corn off the stalk and rush it to a pot of boiling water. The longer you wait, the more sugar you lose. But if you get it in the first half hour, that is the sweetest corn ever. When I got a little older, I played with a BB gun, things like that. But as a young kid, I never did, really have an ambition to be a farmer. I never thought, gee, I would like to farm, and I want to raise these crops. I didn't quite know what I wanted to do.

Three weeks later, on August 6 and 9, the United States brought World War II to a dramatic end by using the bomb to destroy the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On August 6, the world first learned that the Trinity event, which had frightened San Antonioans witless, was not "an ammunition magazine containing high explosives and pyrotechnics" as the military had reported. It was an atomic bomb, "death, the destroyer of worlds," in the words of project physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. It was in this crucible of suspicion and disinterest bred by familiarity that a small contingent of the U.S. Army passed almost unnoticed through San Antonio in mid-to-late August, 1945 on a secret assignment. Little or nothing has been printed about the mission, shrouded in the "hush-hush" atmosphere of the time. But the military detail apparently came from White Sands Proving Grounds to the east where the bomb was exploded. Foreign Law Consultant Rule Rules 26-101 to 26-106 of the New Mexico Rules Governing Admission to the Bar set forth the procedure to obtain certification to practice as a foreign law consultant in New Mexico and the rules a foreign law consultant must follow once authorized to do so. Law School Teacher Rule The dean of the law school must certify the law professor or lawyer in the clinical program which certification must be filed with the clerk of the Supreme Court at the beginning of each academic year. Certifications remain in effect for that academic year. While not a member of the state bar if admitted under this rule, law professors or lawyers are subject to the disciplinary rules and procedures of the Supreme Court and must pay the annual disciplinary fee required of bar members.
