How to find the Centennial Library on campus

The Map and Geographic Information Center , located at the Centennial Science and Engineering Library , is the largest and most varied collection of maps, atlases, and other related material in the state of New Mexico. The following sections describe some of our material and services.
MAGIC has gotten two new computers in to run the ArcView software!!! They are much faster and have double the RAM of our old machine. At the same time, we got an upgrade for the ArcView program, so we are now running ArcView version 3.2. Come by and see how much difference a new machine can make! It also means that we have TWO machines, so there will be fewer cases where you have to wait for someone else to finish their project.
CARTOGRAPHIC RESOURCES IN MAGIC
Searching LIBROS (the library's online catalog) will identify atlases and other book material related to cartography housed in MAGIC, CSEL and other UNMGL libraries . With the exception of some maps published by the federal government, the sheet map collection in MAGIC is uncataloged and will not have records in LIBROS. MAGIC staff will be able to assist you in finding uncataloged material.

NEW MEXICO HEALTH CARE DATA and STATISTICS
The Division of Government Research (DGR) has assisted the New Mexico Health Policy Commission (NM HPC) in performing data integration/analysis and GIS work using the NM Health Information System (HIS). This Web page provides examples of some of the health care related data, reports, and maps (GIS facilities) prepared by DGR for the NM HPC. All work for the New Mexico Health Policy Commission (NM HPC) was conducted as part of DGR's public service function at UNM. DGR has been working with the NM HPC since 1990. The information presented here is intended to serve as an example of the technology transfer services that DGR has traditionally provided to state government agencies. The Division of Government (DGR) and the New Mexico Health Policy Commission (NM HPC) recently won the poster contest for analytical content at the ESRI Southwest User Group Conference ( SWUG ) held in Taos, New Mexico October 2002. This poster entitled "Measuring Geographic Access to Primary Care Physicians in New Mexico" is available for download as a pdf. New Mexico. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment "
Abbreviation:
NM New Mexico was the Spanish name for the territory north and west of the Rio Grande. New Mexico was admitted to the Union as the 47th state in 1912. New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment because of its scenic beauty and rich history. In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Coronado trekked through the area known today as New Mexico in search of the fabled seven cities of gold. The state has a large Hispanic population, as New Mexico was under Spanish control from the 16th century until about 1846. The influence of the Apache Indians who live there is evident in the artwork and culture. The Pueblo Indian presence is also very apparent, most visibly in the tribe's buildings. Part of the "Old West", New Mexico was a place known for cowboys and cattle drives. The landscape ranges from rose-colored deserts to snow-capped mountains. Lovers of history can visit Indian ruins, frontier forts and Spanish missions. Indian ceremonies, Spanish fiestas and local rodeos are among the most interesting events for tourists.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Santa Anna's last political venture resulted in the sale of more Mexican territory. In what is known in the United States as the Gadsden Purchase, ratified by the United States Congress in 1854, Santa Anna sold 77,692 square kilometers of land in southern New Mexico and Arizona for US$10 million (see fig. 2). This additional loss of territory alienated a large, reform-minded group of young Mexicans, who then conspired to oust Santa Anna.
