Giordano Ruscelli after Jacopo Gastaldi. "Nueva Hispania Tabula Nova." State 3. From La Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo . Venice: Rosaccio, 1598. 7 1/8 x 9 5/8. Engraving. Excellent condition. Framed. Burden: 3. DR This map was based on Giacomo Gastaldi's map of the same title, which when issued in 1548 was the first map of New Spain. Ruscelli's map significantly improves upon the earlier map, in part by correctly showing Yucatan as a peninsula. Also, the Gulf of Mexico coast, the Florida keys, Texas and the Baja Peninsula had by 1561 been explored by Coronado, Moscossa, Pineda, De Leon, and Cabeza de Vaca. This map was one of the first maps to show the mouth of the Mississippi River (Rio de Spirito Santo) at its proper position on the Gulf. A number of settlements are shown in the interior of Mexico, including Mexico City. The detail given of the points along the coasts of Mexico is obviously an indication of the importance of the Spanish discoveries that had taken place as a result of the search for gold. As one of the very first maps to show the region this is an important document in the history of the American southwest.

USGS and TopoZone Partner for The National Map
The USGS recently signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Maps a la carte, Inc. , creaters of TopoZone, to support The National Map project. As part of the agreement, Maps a la carte, Inc. will develop, enhance and document a suite of Open Source software for serving geospatial data over the Internet. The agreement will result in the distribution of free software tools to The National Map partners to enhance the capability of data sharing. A new poster from the USGS commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The poster features a beautiful reproduction of "Lewis and Clark's Track" and the same geographic area depicted with national elevation data from The National Map in a colorful image of the American landscape. The parallel map construction illustrates how difficult Lewis and Clark's expedition was, how well they mapped the terrain, and how far cartographic techniques have advanced in 200 years.
Retirement of the Global Land Information System (GLIS)
Effective April 30, 2003, the Global Land Information System (GLIS) Web site will no longer be available. EarthExplorer, which now supports the Macintosh platform, replaces GLIS as the USGS tool for querying and ordering satellite images, aerial photographs, and cartographic products. For more information on how to order these products, check the EarthExplorer Web site at

    http://www.spacefame.org/starlab.html
New Mexico Museum of Space History
    STARLAB
STARLAB is a portable planetarium made by Learning Technologies, Inc. and was designed to be used by classroom teachers with little or no background in astronomy. In addition to an accurate starfield, STARLAB's projector is capable of producing other images such as: African, Native American, and Greek mythology, a world map, and a biology cell among others. With STARLAB, the teaching possibilities are endless.
The idea of a museum sharing STARLAB with schools is not a new idea. Approximately ten museums throughout the country are involved in similar programs where teachers receive training on how to use STARLAB.
Through a grant from the New York Hall of Science, the New Mexico Museum of Space History Education Department introduced a teacher training program with STARLAB in 1995.
Since that time, the museum's education staff has added two additional STARLABS to their portable planetarium program.
Teachers can access STARLAB two ways:
    • A STARLAB Outreach Program
      Becoming a trained STARLAB agent
    The New STARLAB Program:
Yes, the program can be classified as new. We have offered the Basic STARLAB program over the past ten years and we will continue to do so. The basic training is a twelve hour workshop which teaches the operation, maintenance and functions of the STARLAB. The second part of the workshop is learning lessons which teach the night sky, why the moon goes through phases and the reason for the seasons.
