NATIVE AMERICAN BOOKS is a section that contains hundreds of short reviews and longer illustrated review-essays about books by Native authors or on Native subjects, especially oriented to schools (and NA Studies courses). Books are reviewed for children (K - 4), Middle school (5 - 8), YA (highschool) and adult. Reference works, Native-centered Science, Art-craft sections too. A section with not too many entries lists Native xuultural curriculum-language materials (mostly for reference by curriculum developers) and another covers audio-visual aids: vids, computer software, films, tapes.Places to find hard-to-find children's books by Native authors. Unfortunately there has been nothing but trouble with this Lpage (basically the guy has turned it into a commercial service and to make sure he gets paid, the freebie one quits working all the time). Here's what you can TRY to get Indian keypals (most Indian schools so far do not have emailboxes for the kids). Access the various school webpages here, and email the computer teacher, whose name is (usually) on it for Webmaster. Ask if they are interested in keypals with your students, and how it should be arranged.

There are two types of Non-Public Schools that the Public Education Department recognizes:
  • Recognized Non-Public Schools Recognized and Accredited Non-Public Schools
Recognized Non-Public Schools: Non-public schools that submit information to the Public Education Department including location, telephone number, contact person, and number of students per grade (K-12). These schools are not accredited. Recognized and Accredited Non-Public Schools: The Public Education Department uses 11 non-public school accrediting agencies to conduct accreditation visits to non-public schools throughout the State requesting accreditation. Each of the 11 non-public school accrediting agencies submits a summary report and recommendation to the NSC regarding accreditation for that school. The NSC reviews all the reports and makes a recommendation to the Secretary of Education regarding the accreditation of each non-public school. Once a non-public school is accredited by the Secretary of Education, the school is eligible for State Instructional Materials funds. In addition, students that transfer from an accredited non-public school to a public school will have all credits accepted.

On Common Ground: Number 9, Fall 2001
Making Connections in a Complex Community
By Michael Fischer K-12 education has long been a major concern, especially in New Mexico. The state projects a serious shortage of elementary and secondary school teachers as enrollment grows and current teachers leave the profession. Although many retire, others resign , often after completing only their first or second year of teaching. New Mexico faces the additional problem of a large percentage of secondary school classes already being taught by teachers lacking a major in the subjects that they are teaching. In 199 8, the New Mexico Roundtable on the Future of Higher Education, a coalition of educators, business leaders, and government officials, consequently called for “New Mexico’s colleges and universities to devote more of their institutional resources in workin g with our public schools to improve the quality of education throughout the state.” Several of the leaders issuing this call felt that teacher preparation was being marginalized, particularly at the University of New Mexico, the state’s flagship university, a Carnegie Research I university of 24,000 students. According to this view, t eacher preparation was a high priority at the University of New Mexico only in the College of Education, supposedly the college with the least prestige at a large research university. Allocating more institutional resources to improving K-12 education acc ordingly meant redirecting more funding to the College of Education, even at the expense of other programs. The problem of teacher education was that urgent.

New Mexico:
Building on a Base by Lynn Schnaiberg Vital Statistics Public school districts Public schools K-12 enrollment Minority students Children in poverty Students with disabilities $1.7 billion Annual K-12 expenditures
(all revenue sources) urt Steinhaus has a new title, thanks to New Mexico's most recent push for accountability. As the state's assistant superintendent for accountability and information services, Steinhaus has spent the past year overseeing changes in its system for holding schools responsible for student performance. Outside consultants fanned out across New Mexico and asked focus groups for their opinions on how to help build on the accountability plan. New Mexico works to beef up its policies for holding schools accountable. "The state board is clearly headed in the direction of working to earn the public's trust," Steinhaus says. "One way to do that is to build a strong accountability policy." That policy aims to improve and streamline the information the state education department collects so districts can spend less time compiling data and more time improving student achievement. School-level report cards are to be more user-friendly and take stock not just of test scores, attendance, and dropout figures, but also school safety and community involvement. In the spring of last year, New Mexico students in grades 4, 6, and 8 took a new achievement test aligned with the state's content standards in reading and language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
