http://www.sanjuaneds.com/0_Community/aztec.html
Aztec was originally settled by Pueblan Indians in the 13th century. The ruined city they left behind on the banks of the Animas River is an outlier of the Chacoan civilization that once extended from northern Mexico into southern Utah. Today Aztec is a town of 6,378 with an historic town center. It is the seat of San Juan County government and home to the Aztec Ruins National Monument. Aztec is located between the larger cities of Farmington, New Mexico, and Durango, Colorado, with comfortable residential neighborhoods and a picturesque central business district that houses several thriving local businesses. The OCEDC Report, June issue's feature story MARTINA MCBRIDE SHOOTS IN OTERO COUNTY The past month has been very active for Joan Griggs, Film Liaison of the Otero County Film Office as the Film Office responded to inquiries and/or visits for three movies, one fashion/travel photography company, one national ad campaign, a documentary for the Travel Channel and one music video. The new music video for Martina McBride was filmed on Otero County ranch locations , and at White Sands National Monument on May 8 and 9. Within Otero County, the production company working for the client, RCA, was able to find a deserted country highway, a high lookout, and a perfect sunset at the White Sands. Over 30 crew and production company personnel were required to produce this video and many New Mexicans were hired. Even though long stretches of highway in New Mexico may appear to be deserted, when you look with the eye of producer, you see the telephone poles, houses, signs and frequently planes are everywhere. After a long day searching, the sites were chosen and the rest of the group, including Martina, began to arrive in Alamogordo. Crew members erected a series of doors across a highway, creating an unusual set. The sky cooperated with blue sky and white clouds. Green screens were used as Martina opened each door, so that the next location could be superimposed in post-production. The TODAY SHOW also had a crew along to video the experience of their mother-daughter winners of a Mother’s Day competition. This mother-daughter combo won the opportunity to be a part of Martina’s newest video. Be watching for this new music video of Martina McBride’s beautiful song, “How Far”.

New Mexico. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment "
    Abbreviation:
NM New Mexico was the Spanish name for the territory north and west of the Rio Grande. New Mexico was admitted to the Union as the 47th state in 1912. New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment because of its scenic beauty and rich history. In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Coronado trekked through the area known today as New Mexico in search of the fabled seven cities of gold. The state has a large Hispanic population, as New Mexico was under Spanish control from the 16th century until about 1846. The influence of the Apache Indians who live there is evident in the artwork and culture. The Pueblo Indian presence is also very apparent, most visibly in the tribe's buildings. Part of the "Old West", New Mexico was a place known for cowboys and cattle drives. The landscape ranges from rose-colored deserts to snow-capped mountains. Lovers of history can visit Indian ruins, frontier forts and Spanish missions. Indian ceremonies, Spanish fiestas and local rodeos are among the most interesting events for tourists.

FAST FACTS Gross state tax revenues (rank): $4 billion (35) State tax revenues per capita (rank): State tax revenues as % of personal income (rank): State and local taxes as % of personal income (rank): Standout characteristics: One of the most centrally funded states; top state in ratio of return from federal government ($2.08 for every $1 put in); one of most successful states in reducing disparities in education funding. About these charts Among the services taxed are those of doctors and dentists, lawyers, engineers and accountants, plus a variety of other activities that are given a free pass in most states. The majority of labor services and repairs are taxed in New Mexico, as are construction contracts and just about all personal services, such as barbershops, laundries and health clubs. One way to pay for rate reductions might be by eliminating some current exemptions. A candidate is the exemption from the gross receipts tax for nonprofits. Changing this rule would allow the state to bring in revenue from Los Alamos National Laboratory, which is operated by the University of California. This would treat it in the same way the state treats Sandia National Laboratories, which is privately operated. Congressional Quarterly, Inc.
