New Mexico Given Unprecedented Statewide Flexibility in Education Programs
To help advance local school improvement efforts in New Mexico, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley today announced he has awarded the state the authority to waive federal education rules and regulations that can hinder community efforts to improve teaching and learning. Statewide, school district and individual school waivers designed to cut red tape are available under a new "Ed Flex" partnership between New Mexico and the U.S. Department of Education. Riley said this break with the old top down approach to government was made possible by the Goals 2000: Educate America Act , designed to promote and support state and community efforts to help students learn the basics and core subjects to high standards.

Introduction
Guide to Schools Degree Programs Campus-Based Scholarships ... Administrative Code Licensed Private Post-Secondary Institutions
The State of New Mexico provides limited regulation of academic programs offered by private institutions. The New Mexico Commission on Higher Education is authorized to license private career schools and non-accredited degree granting institutions operating in the state. Although the Commission sets standards regarding issues such as faculty qualification, credit hour requirements and administrative procedures, the focus of the regulations is on consumer protection . Consequently, licensure with the Commission does not constitute endorsement or approval of an institution by the Commission. The US Department of Education has a "Closed School Information" site. It explains how postsecondary students can continue their education and resolve student loan issues if they attend a school that has closed. The US Department of Education site allows you to identify and document instantly the closed status of postsecondary schools, and it can be used to confirm whether a student is eligible for cancellation of a student loan received at a school that closed while the student was enrolled. http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/Students/closedschool/
