    An important part of the mission of the Bureau is to distribute accurate geoscience information about the resources, water, hazards, and geologic history of New Mexico. We serve a broad audience, from professional geoscientists and university professors to grade-school children and their teachers as well as influential decision makers and the general public.
  • School-children and adults alike enjoy visiting the Bureau Mineral Museum (no admission fees) which highlights many of the mineral districts in New Mexico and elsewhere.

    Nicknamed "The Land of Enchantment," New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the US with an area of 121,598 square miles. The state's relatively small population of 1,829,146 is ethnically diverse. About 42% of the population is of Hispanic origin, 44% is White and 9.5% is of American Indian heritage. More than one-third of the nation's Navajo population resides here. There are four Indian reservations in the state: Jicarilla Apache, Mescalero Apache, Navajo Nation and Ute Mountain. Nineteen pueblos are located in seven counties throughout the state.
