This funding is needed to meet new and emerging threats on the global battlefield; modernize our military; improve intelligence; fund new high-tech weapons; protect our troops against chemical and biological attacks; and give our troops another well-deserved pay raise and their families important quality of life improvements, including better housing and health care.

The New Mexico Academy Commitment Aiming to promote and maintain socioeconomic diversity among our student population, New Mexico Academy demonstrates a strong commitment to need-based financial aid by providing a nationally competitive percentage of the school's budget to fund the financial needs of its students. While we are fortunate to have funds reserved for financial aid in these early years of operation, we believe that families bear the primary responsibility for financing education to the extent that they are able. Our financial aid program exists to help assure that any admitted student with demonstrated need will have the opportunity to attend New Mexico Academy. TOP How Financial Aid Is Given New Mexico Academy is a member of the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), which assists independent schools in determining a family's financial need. The Report of Family Contribution (RFC) that is computed by SSS is reviewed by our financial aid officer and serves as a guideline in making financial aid decisions. The RFC report does not bind the New Mexico Academy to any specific award.

The Condition of Education 1995 - August 1995
Commissioner's Statement (Part 6 of 6)
How have conditions facing the schools changed?
Changing conditions that schools must confront are putting additional strains on revenues, even though revenues have increased. First, schools are facing a period of rising enrollments after a long period of decline ( Indicator 35 ). It is important to monitor these increases because they will affect school budgets as well as policies of teacher recruitment and retention. Second, many more disabled students, particularly those with learning disabilities, are receiving special services ( Indicator 42 ). This has major financial implications for school districts. There is some evidence that the average cost of serving a special education student is as much as 2.3 times the cost of serving regular students (ranging from 1.9 times for students in resource programs to 10.6 times for students in residential programs). Third, many more students speak a language other than English at home and have difficulty speaking English, a likely indication that even more students may have difficulty reading and writing English. By law, school systems nationwide must provide services for children from non-English-language backgrounds. Because these students are disproportionately concentrated in a few states (California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and New York), the education systems in these states are under particular strain to respond to the special needs of these children.
