WEST NILE INFORMATION SENT TO
NEW MEXICO CITIES AND COUNTIES
SANTA FE – Secretary Alex Valdez today sent the attached letter and information on the West Nile Virus (WNV) to New Mexico City and County Managers. The letter advised for municipalities and counties to be on the lookout for the virus. WNV is a mosquito-borne disease that in a small percentage of cases can be deadly. The virus first appeared on the east coast and has been steadily spreading west, with Texas reporting cases in the past month in the Houston area. WNV cycles between birds and mosquitoes but can infect a wide range of animals (especially horses) and people. In humans infected with the virus, it usually produces either no symptoms or a mild illness with fever and sometimes a rash that lasts for a few days. In 2001, 66 people in the United States developed severe disease and 9 people died. It is estimated that about one in every 150 people who are infected with the virus develop severe complications.

West Nile Virus Information for New Mexico Cities and Counties
Dear New Mexico City and County Managers: This letter is to inform you of a mosquito-borne disease that is steadily making its way west across the United States. In late summer 1999, the first human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) were documented in the New York City area. By the end of last year, the disease had spread via birds and mosquitoes as far west as Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. Just several weeks ago, Texas reported its first case of WNV in a dead bird in the Houston area. WNV cycles between birds and mosquitoes but can infect a wide range of animals (especially horses) and people. In humans infected with the virus, it usually produces either no symptoms or a mild illness with fever and sometimes a rash that lasts for a few days. It can cause severe and fatal infection in a small percentage of persons. In 2001, 66 people in the United States developed severe disease (some with permanent brain damage) and 9 people died. It is estimated that about one in every 150 people who are infected with the virus develop these severe complications.
