Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

Two hundred arrests in New Jersey teachers strike
By Steve Light and Jeremy Johnson 7 December 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Each time Judge Fisher found groups of three or four or five people in contempt and deputies led them out of the courtroom, the 150 teachers inside stood and applauded their comrades. Outside, members of the Middletown South High School football team, which won a state championship game last Saturday, cheered for their head coach and an assistant coach, both of whom were jailed. Teachers also milled around a rear door and cheered handcuffed colleagues each time deputies led them to vans for the trips to the county jail. Three years ago the teachers, who are members of the Middletown Township Education Association, went on strike. The board got an injunction against the walkout and voted to impose a contract on the teachers.

Bergen County Technical Schools' Career Academies
Hackensack, New Jersey
January 29, 1999 A Trip Report
Our one-day visit to Hackensack, New Jersey showcased career academies administered by the Bergen County Technical Schools system. The Bergen County Academies, once a traditional shared-time vocational high school, were transformed into seven individual academies, each with a clear career focus, faculty, student body, and curriculum. The career academy model has shown success in raising student achievement and is widely supported by the surrounding community.
The Bergen County Technical Schools system is comprised of a number of vocational schools, including the career academies, to meet the needs of a range of educational interests and abilities. The seven career academies are designed for students with strong academic skills who plan to pursue a baccalaureate education.
There are also two Technical Education Centers that offer shared-time Tech Prep 2+2 programs and other shop programs. Students spend half their school day at their local high school where academic instruction and support services are provided, and half day at the Technical Education Center. This program begins with career exploration for students, who enter as 9th or 10th graders. Returning students in grades 11 and 12 are placed in major shops (career clusters).
Another part of the system includes two Vocational High Schools. These schools offer full-time and limited shared-time programs for students with educational disabilities. Academic and vocational courses are designed to allow the students to meet New Jersey high school graduation requirements. The goal of these two programs is to teach students to live independently and work in a competitive employment environment.

There were so many different courses to choose from. To tell you the truth, I was very confused about what I wanted. Later that day, after school, I decided to look through the job classifieds, hoping that I would get some kind of idea. That is when it hit me. At the bottom of every ad it said, “ Computer skills needed.” The next day I walked into the guidance office with my head held high, and the answer to the inevitable question, “ What I wanted to do in life.” That day I grabbed an application to study Computer Information Technology at Monmouth County Vocational School, Keyport. It was one of the best decisions I could have ever made.

95. Vocational-Technical Schools
vocationalTechnical schools, or Vo-Techs, prepare adolescents and adults to In NewJersey, vocational-technical education is delivered on a county-wide basis.
http://www.njn.net/workforce/vocational.html
Vocational-Technical schools, or Vo-Techs, prepare adolescents and adults to enter the labor market through a combination of academic, technological and specialty training. In New Jersey, vocational-technical education is delivered on a county-wide basis.
For the adolescent, a Vo-Tech is a public secondary school with emphasis on career preparation. Vo-Techs offer students an alternative to the traditional comprehensive high school. Generally, students and parents decide whether to attend a comprehensive high school or a Vo-Tech when the student is in the 7th or 8th grade. However, a transfer from a comprehensive high school can be made right up to the 10th grade year. Upon graduation, students from vocational-technical schools receive a state endorsed high school diploma and a certificate of competency in their career area.
For the adult learner, Vo-Techs offer a wide variety of adult education and career programs, both full and part-time, in the areas of technology, culinary arts, nursing and healthcare, building trades, and much more.
To learn about course offerings, registration, costs, and financial aid, browse through the following listing of county vocational-technical schools.
