Travel New York City January 2004 The New Jersey Statewide Systemic Initiative (NJ SSI) will distribute approximately $300,000 to over 20 districts in an effort to implement successful, education enriched programs, focusing primarily on the professional development of teachers. "NJ SSI has distributed these grants since 1997, which have helped schools and school districts from every section of New Jersey and have led to increased student achievement in participating schools," says NJ SSI Project Director, Deborah Cook of Rutgers University. "Due to continued state and federal funding, we can build upon NJ SSI's mission of excellence in mathematics, science, and technology education throughout New Jersey." NJ SSI invited local districts of New Jersey to submit proposals, including charter and vocational schools, as well as urban and smaller schools. Almost 60 districts applied for the grants. Those selected will receive grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 which will go towards improving professional development, supporting models of successful standards implementation, and using hands-on, problem- solving approaches to learning.

State Regulation of Private Schools - June 2000
New Jersey
Registration/Licensing/Accreditation: New Jersey law places registration requirements on a limited category of private schools that are not operated by charitable institutions or religious denominations, i.e. for-profit nonsectarian private boarding schools established after 1920 and private schools charging tuition for certain vocational education. This limited category of schools must obtain a certificate of approval from the Commissioner of Education to legally operate within the state. N.J. Rev. Stat. 18A:69-1 et seq Recordkeeping/Reports: Length of School Year/Day: Curriculum: Special Education: et seq Health: Safety: Transportation: The New Jersey Constitution declares that the state legislature may, within reasonable limitations as to distance, provide student transportation (ages 5-18) to and from any school. New Jersey Const. Art. 8, 4, par. 3. Home Schooling: New Jersey does not have a code that addresses the area of home schooling. New Jersey?s compulsory education law states that every child between the ages of six and 16 must attend a public or private school, or receive "equivalent instruction elsewhere than at school". N.J. Rev. Stat. § 18A: 38-25. Responsibility for enforcing the compulsory education law rests with the local board of education. When a school board has reason to believe that a parent or guardian is not complying with the compulsory education law, the local board of education can initiate truancy proceedings in municipal court, requiring parents or legal guardians to document their activities in providing "equivalent instruction". N.J. Rev. Stat. §§ 18A: 38-27 through 18A: 38-31.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to identify the perceived impact of the vocational career academy on comprehensive high schools in the state of New Jersey. The study was designed to evaluate the career academy reform strategy, as it pertains to the opinions and attitudes of superintendents/assistant superintendents, pnincipals/assistant principals and eighth grade guidance counselors affiliated with their county vocational-technical schools that incorporated the career academy model. The respondents represented six counties within the state of New Jersey and were surveyed as to what factors they perceived impacted on the comprehensive high school. Thus, the study examined how vocational education changes are influencing the local comprehensive high schools.
The evaluation investigated related literature pertaining to comprehensive high schools, vocational education trends, reform and legislation. Specifically, the study focused on New Jersey high school administrators and middle school counselors. The following research questions were examined in the perceptions of the respondents: (1) Do comprehensive high schools accept the career academy model? (2) To what extent does the level of knowledge and school type affiliation affect perceptions/attitudes toward career academies? (3) Are career academies perceived as draining sending comprehensive high schools of their best students? (4) Are career academies perceived as draining sending comprehensive high schools of their tax dollars?
