October is SIDS Awareness Month in New Jersey

Health care professionals at the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Center of New Jersey of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) are conducting educational activities throughout the month of October to help parents and child-care providers reduce the risk of infant mortality. SIDS is the number one cause of infant mortality in the United States for children who are between one month and one year of age. The activities coincide with Governor James E. McGreevey's proclamation that October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month in New Jersey. The proclamation was presented to the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Center of New Jersey, a statewide initiative that is part of the Department of Pediatrics at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. The program also has a site at the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack. SIDS is defined as the sudden unexpected death of a seemingly healthy infant and the cause is unknown.

Okay, there are a few of those? He also happens to be a brilliant writer and a fastidious reporter. A stickler for accuracy and journalistic integrity, Steven Brill is one of America's most famous watchdogs. He recently shifted his eyes towards the media with his latest creation, Brill's Content magazine, which was launched in the summer of 1998. Known for his sarcasm, temper, and ruthlessly competitive nature, Brill is said to have bitten an opponent during a 'friendly' water polo game with co-workers. Perhaps this brutal straightforwardness is what engenders Brill's uncanny ability (and undying compulsion) to expose hypocrisy-Brill is completely devoted to his own explicit concept of journalistic integrity. Born in Queens, New York, Brill attended boarding school at the prestigious Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, then went to Yale for both undergraduate and law school. While at the nation's most prestigious law school, Brill was notoriously absent from class - as he spent most of his time in New York working for Mayor John Lindsay and writing for

The demands of the Core Curriculum Content Standards and frameworks recently adopted by the New Jersey state legislation are being met across the various disciplines and at all our grade levels. Our students are working in cooperative learning groups, analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating information and assessing possible alternatives, thus developing their reasoning and logical thinking skills. In the arts and special subject areas, Ann Street students are developing critical thinking skills of observation, interpretation and evaluation by writing about their experiences within these subject areas and by attending concerts and visiting museums. They are refining their technical and artistic skills in the performing arts by participating in our school chorus, orchestra, band and recorder ensemble. In the graphic arts, students learn art appreciation and develop individual talents through art projects that include ceramics, paints, block and linoleum printing, watercolors, rubbings, etc. Career Day and occasional presentations by community members assist our students in career planning. Many doors open to our graduates when they enter the working world because of their skills in a second language. Workplace readiness skills, which are developed at all grade levels, are coordinated by our guidance counselor.

Trenton Public Schools
Over the past 30 years, the City of Trenton has worked to transform the industrial area known as the Roebling complex into a catalyst for Trenton's revitalization and growth. Although originally designed to produce steel wire rope used in suspension bridges (most notably the Brooklyn Bridge in New York and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco), the buildings since have been recycled and converted into a variety of uses, including an arena, senior housing, museums, shops, offices, high-tech entertainment studios, and a rail transit hub. Within the next three years, one of the last unused sections of this historic complex will take new form and become a state-of-the-art 1,200-student public school facility.
The Roebling School project was made possible in large part by the landmark Abbott vs. Burke court case, in which the New Jersey Supreme Court mandated funding equivalent to the state's top districts for 30 of the state's special needs districts, of which Trenton is one. As a result of the decision, the state dedicated more than $8 billion dollars for new school construction statewide through the year 2010. The New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (NJSCC), a subsidiary of the NJ Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), is in charge of producing and financing these new high-quality schools and school improvements.

) Students returning to school in the Borough of Middlesex this fall will walk to school on safer streets, thanks to wireless phones donated by Verizon Wireless, formerly Bell Atlantic Mobile. School crossing guards in the Borough have been outfitted with wireless phones programmed to dial 9-1-1 to quickly and easily summon help in emergencies.
"Every day, school crossing guards are on the front lines protecting our children as they navigate busy streets and intersections on their way to class," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro region. "These phones will ensure that they can summon help immediately without leaving their posts. These phones will put safety in the palms of their hands."
The Borough Council requested the phones to enable crossing guards to respond quickly to accidents, medical emergencies or crimes in progress.

State Fully Funding, Managing $18 Million Project
Camden, NJ (April 29, 2004) - As part of an educational renaissance in Camden, city residents attended a presentation of design plans for a new $18 million Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) by New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC), the Camden Board of Education, Don Todd Associates of Cherry Hill, the project management firm, and the Hillier Group, a Princeton architectural firm.
The new ECDC is one of a total of $437 million in new school projects SCC has on tap for the Camden School District over the next several years. Also, in Camden alone, SCC already has completed nearly $26 million in health and safety upgrades at 33 schools. SCC is fully funding and managing these projects in the city school district of Camden County as part of the state’s unprecedented $8.6 billion school construction program.
Governor McGreevey – who initiated SCC in July 2002 to streamline the building of much-needed quality schools statewide – said, “These projects in Camden represent New Jersey’s continued commitment to our children. Working together, we are living up to our most important obligation by providing 21st century schools to ensure every child has the opportunity to get the education they deserve and skills necessary to succeed.”

trathmore Elementary went online in November, 1996, with nothing more than a Mac LS575 in the library, and a lot of new ideas. Soon after going online, I decided to get some of our students involved in communicating with children around the world. I quickly found out, however, that most collaborative projects, like keypals, start in September. I answered several online requests for partner classes, but received no responses.
Jo Dervan, Library Media Specialist
ventually, I found a site which listed a school in Ontario, Canada and another in the Northwest Territories. Deer Meadow School and Leo Ussak School would be Strathmore's first keypal exchanges. Deer Meadow is in Olds, Ontario, and Leo Ussak is high in the Arctic, in Rankin Inlet, Northwest Territories, Canada.
We started a correspondence between our fifth graders and the fifth graders of both schools. Our teachers sent student names, ages, and interests to the Canadian teachers, who then paired up the students. Since we lived in such different places, we gave our Strathmore students geography lessons on the locations of both schools. We used classroom maps, globes, and Internet resources in the library. Both Deer Meadow and Leo Ussak had geographic information on their school Web sites, which we were able to access in library class. At the outset, our students were very excited, but they became bored with the letters when we began running out of new things to learn about each other.
