Primary Health Care Programs Each year millions of vulnerable people, especially children, die unnecessarily of disease and malnutrition because they lack access to basic healthcare and nutrition. The American Red Cross is focusing its health response to this crisis in three areas: Combating Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases (HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis), Maternal and Child Health and Emergency Health. In the world's poorest regions, the American Red Cross trains local health promoters, volunteers and caregivers to advocate and teach proper health practices such as breast-feeding, sanitation and the detection of early signs of disease in children. This network of health promoters, including youth/peer educators, is the critical community link for national and local disease prevention programs such as vaccine campaigns, distribution of bed nets against malaria and HIV/AIDS awareness. Bright Futures for Infants, Children, and Adolescents Bright Futures Update
The interactive Bright Futures website
showcases implementation of Bright Futures across the country, provides access to Bright Futures publications and tools to download and/or purchase, and will provide on-line training opportunities. Bright Futures Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children and Adolescents, the cornerstone of the initiative, are currently undergoing a major revision by interdisciplinary panels of experts in infancy, early and middle childhood, and adolescence. The new Guidelines are expected to be available in early 2005. Background
At the beginning of the 20th century, infectious diseases caused most of the morbidity and mortality in children. Although there has been great success in reducing contagious diseases, children today face new issues. Over the past several decades, major economic, social, and demographic changes have significantly affected American families. These societal changes have brought shifts in the chief causes of morbidity and mortality among children and adolescents. Injuries are now the leading cause of death for children older than 1 year. In addition, a significant percentage of American children have mental and emotional disorders. Developmental problems, educational failure, too much risk taking, lack of supervision, and child abuse are also among these "new morbidities." Also, the population of children with special health needs due to illness or disability has grown.
