The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been assessing and monitoring the natural resources and natural hazards of New Jersey for more than a century. Through cooperative programs with more than 25 Federal, State, and local agencies, the USGS studies water supply, water quality, floods and droughts, and many other natural-resource issues throughout the State. USGS information is the starting point for many scientific investigations, construction projects, and recreational activities. In 1996, USGS personnel in New Jersey responded to more than 1,000 information requests from businesses, government agencies, and the public.
Water Supply
New Jersey's water resources are constantly strained by the competing needs of the growing population, agriculture, industry, and recreation. During 1989-90, statewide use of surface and ground waters averaged 1,680 and 561 million gallons per day, respectively. The USGS, in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), is addressing current water-supply problems and future water needs with a three-phase program. First, field-work data are collected to document current conditions and to assess the scope of any potential problem. Next, maps, tables, and graphs are prepared to identify available resources and possible problems. And third, computer models are developed to simulate surface- and ground-water flow and to predict the feasibility and effects of water-use alternatives for the future. This information is available to water managers and others who must ensure an adequate supply of water into the next century.

DEPARTMENT OF GEOSCIENCE/GEOGRAPHY
The geological and geographical science components of the department provide a strong background in the physical and earth sciences to all students. Special emphasis is placed on development of the intellectual, technical and career skills required for professional employment in students’ chosen areas of interest.
All general education courses in our department provide students with an up-to-date introduction to the concepts, methods and skills essential to an understanding of the earth and geographical sciences. Major courses deepen and broaden students’ understanding of these concepts and methods. Laboratory and field work stresses their application to the needs and problems of modern society. Because our class sizes are generally small, we work closely with our students on an individual basis; thus providing a strong foundation in the earth and geographical sciences.
Our program provides a career component that includes a strong connection with the University's cooperative education program. Job placement, for those undergraduates who wish it, is a primary goal. Our program also helps to guide students into many excellent graduate programs throughout the country. The faculty members have contacts with professionals in many of these programs and with prominent professionals in government and industry as well. These contacts help us to place students in rewarding situations after they graduate from our program.

Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sarke are all remnants of the ancient Duchy of Normandy, which country, under the Romans, was called Augia, and was their second Provincia Lugdunensis, and under the kings of the Franks constituted a part of the kingdom of Neusiria. In nine hundred and twelve, Charles the Simple, ceded it to the piratical Normans, as a fief of France, and Rollo - their leader was married to a daughter of the same king, William, the sixth Duke of Normandy, became king of England, and (with the rest of his dominions) annexed these islands to the sovereignty of England, the only parts now in our possesion. They belong to Hampshire, and are in the diocese of Winchester.
ISLAND of JERSEY
Engraved by W. Hooper
The first of these, Jersey, lies about fifteen miles west of the coast of France, or the Cape of La Hogue, and eighty four miles south of Portland, in Dorsetshire. It was anciently called Caesaria, and here many Roman coins have been dug up, along with other antiquities; and there are yet the vestiges of a Roman camp, near the Manor of Dilamant.

W elcome to New Jersey. New Jersey ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1787 becoming the third state to do so, and was the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights in 1789. N ew Jersey is an aggressively industrial state, and has been throughout U.S. history. As far back as 1791, when Alexander Hamilton chose the Great Falls of the Passaic River as the site of a model factory town, industry began to shape the state. Then, throughout the 19th century, New Jersey saw transportation feed industry, as canals, railroads, roads, and ports were built. And on into the 20th century, as its highway and transportation systems improved, it has continued to reign as one of the leading industrial states in the country. THE NAME: Sir John Berkley and Sir George Carteret received a royal charter for a colony in the new land and named this colony for the island of Jersey in the English Channel. Carteret had been born on Jersey and had spent several years as Lieutenant Governor of the island. Source: Shearer, Benjamin F. and Barbara S.
