Originally inhabited by tribes of the Lenape , New Jersey became a colony of Britain on March 12 . King Charles II of England gave his brother, the Duke of York (later James II of England ) the region between New England and Maryland as a proprietary colony (as opposed to a royal colony). John Reid. "The State of New Jersey from the latest Surveys." From The American Atlas. Published as an accompaniment to An historical, geographical, commercial, and philosophical view of the United States of America... by William Winterbotham A map of New Jersey from the second atlas published in the United States. This atlas, the American Atlas , was published by John Reid in 1796, and it was to accompany Winterbotham's Views of the United States . The map includes the typical notations of towns, counties, and road system. More atypically, and charmingly, is the inclusion of certain churches, mills, and taverns. A fine, eighteenth century American-made map of the state.
Jedidiah Morse. "New Jersey."
From Jedidiah Morse's The American Universal Geography This eighteenth map was from Jedidiah Morse's Geography , which was one of the first American publications of its kind. Morse, the father of Samuel F.B. Morse, established himself in the 1780s as one of the leading producers of American maps. Samuel Hill, the engraver, is one of the early names in patriotic publishing, especially during the Federalist Period. The map is of interest because of its early detail, including towns, counties, lakes, streams and other topographical information.

Eighteenth century maps by Jedidiah Morse. From The American Universal Geography (1796) and The American Gazetteer (1797). Engravings by Amos Doolittle, Benjamin Callender and Samuel Hill. With folds as issued. Very good condition, except as noted. A series of late eighteenth century maps of various American states and territories. These maps are by Jedidiah Morse, one of the most influential of the early American cartographers. Some were originally drawn by other cartographers such as Osgood Carleton and J. Denison. Amos Doolittle, Benjamin Callender and Samuel Hill, the engravers, are some other of the most important names in early American printmaking. These maps are of considerable interest both because of the detailed information they provide on the United States at the end of the eighteenth century and because they are among the best examples of early American mapmaking.

Israel (area=20,770 sq. km.), a country slightly smaller than New Jersey, is located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Egypt (area=1,001,450 sq. km.) and Lebanon (area=10,400 sq. km.) on the coast and bordering Jordan (area=92,300 sq. km.) and Syria (area=185,180 sq. km.) inland. Another way to visualize Israel's size is to note that Lake Erie along the northern border of the U.S. is considerably bigger than Israel (approx. 25,700 sq. km.) The territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 war are not included in the area of 20,770 sq. km.. These territories are Judea, Samaria (the "West Bank")

WHERE IN THE WORLD Among 18- to 24-year-old Americans given maps:
87 percent cannot find Iraq
83 percent cannot find Afghanistan
76 percent cannot find Saudi Arabia
70 percent cannot find New Jersey
49 percent cannot find New York
11 percent cannot find the United States RELATED Global Geographic Literacy Survey Take the quiz WASHINGTON (AP) Young Americans may soon have to fight a war in Iraq, but most of them can't even find that country on a map, the National Geographic Society said Wednesday. The society survey found that only about one in seven 13 percent of Americans between the age of 18 and 24, the prime age for military warriors, could find Iraq. The score was the same for Iran, an Iraqi neighbor. Although the majority, 58 percent, of the young Americans surveyed knew that the Taliban and al Qaeda were based in Afghanistan, only 17 percent could find that country on a world map. A U.S.-led force attacked the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan in October 2001, and President Bush has said he is prepared to use force to rid Iraq of any chemical, nuclear or biological weapons programs.
