The New Jersey Historical Society Library
The library collections of The New Jersey Historical Society contain manuscripts, rare and reference books, photographs, maps, broadsides, pamphlets and other materials that document the cultural and historical heritage of New Jersey from the colonial era through the 20th century. The collections form the most comprehensive, privately-funded library on New Jersey's past. The library is open to the public and serves a diverse clientele including scholars, students of the humanities, local historians, genealogists and others.
The Library also has resources such as city directories, local histories, and vital records, original church records, and special indexes to New Jersey materials that aid family historians. Maps
The library's map collection documents the transformation of New Jersey's rural and urban areas over the last three centuries. The more than 2,000 maps include a number of 17th century Dutch maps, Abel Buell's 1783 map showing the boundaries of the emerging states; "A Mapp of New Jarsey" by John Seller and William Fisher (1677) and William Faden's 1777 "Map of the Province of New Jersey, divided into East and West." More recent maps such as city street maps, highway maps, and topographical maps of the state are also in the collection. Want to be an expert at our library before you arrive?

Pair of ice skates, about 1880-1900

One of the main winter sports in 19th century New Jersey was ice skating. The sport was enhanced in mid-century by the introduction of an all-steel skate which replaced the somewhat cumbersome wood-based style.

Our literature page summaries these general information sources.
Using Standard ML of New Jersey
Obtaining the SML/NJ Software
SML/NJ is available for free via internet ftp or the web. It's use is governed by a very liberal license
Installing SML/NJ
Installing SML/NJ under under Unix is easy, and generally just requires downloading the files and running a shell script. Installation under Windows is even easier using the self-installing ".exe" file.
The SML/NJ FAQ
A FAQ for SML/NJ is currently under development but is still very fragmentary.
The SML/NJ Interactive System

Genealogical Research at The New York Public Library
Decorative genealogical chart , origin unknown The New York Public Library's Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy is one of the largest genealogical and local history collections open to the public in this country, and, as such, it is one of the most heavily used divisions in the Library. What follows is a selective list of resources available to family historians at The New York Public Library . Unless noted otherwise, all sources cited are located in the Milstein Division. Most of the microform titles are self-service in the Milstein Division Microform Room (Room 119).

Because most Library materials are held in "closed stacks," and must be retrieved for researchers by Library staff, access is provided through New York Public Library catalogs:

Burlington County Resources and Lookup Volunteers
If you have any books or CDs on Burlington County and will volunteer to do lookups, please let me know. Please follow these guidelines when requesting a look-up.
  • Put name of county and LOOKUP in caps in subject of message. This will ensure that your request is not accidently overlooked or deleted. Put name of book or CD you are requesting the lookup from in the first line of the message. Many of these wonderful volunteers have more than one book or CD and need to know what you are looking for in order to try to help you. Limit your request to 1 or 2 specific names. Asking for ALL the marriages on a surname of Brown or Jones or Smith will probably be ignored or request denied. Don't forget to thank your volunteer for their time and trouble.
