Verizon Proposes $20 Million Increase in Advanced Technologies for New Jersey Schools
No Rate Increase Requested: Lifeline Service Commitment Expanded
Verizon Working to Bring New Jersey Benefits Of All-Out Competition for Local, Long-Distance Services NEWARK, N.J. The hike in funding, noted in the company's reply briefs filed today with the Board of Public Utilities, comes at a time when most budgets for such equipment are being slashed. "The documents we filed today emphasize our commitment to New Jersey," said Dennis Bone, president of Verizon New Jersey. "This plan is a workable blueprint that assures that residents of every age and income level and businesses of every size and type could continue to have full access to one of the most advanced telecommunications networks in the world." Verizon's proposal has been the subject of extensive public hearings since it was filed with the board on Feb. 15, 2001. It includes no rate increases, but recognizes the intense competition for business services. The proposal would allow Verizon to operate under the same rules that apply to others providing telecommunications services to businesses in the state.

Sample Proposals ... Join the SchoolGrants Team! G rant Opportunities Grant opportunities that will benefit K-12 schools, educators, and students are posted on the pages listed below.
When you find an opportunity that appears to match your project goals, be sure to follow the links to the funder's site for more information.
Remember, it is critical that your project matches the funder's guidelines. You will waste both your time and the grant-maker's if you submit a proposal that does not match the grantor's funding initiatives. The SchoolGrants focus is primarily schools within the United States. There are, however, often opportunities available that extend to our Canadian neighbors. Most of such opportunities are found on the Nationwide Opportunities pages.
If you know of opportunities that are not listed on the SchoolGrants site, we would appreciate you letting me know about them! It is the SchoolGrants goal to provide as many opportunities as possible to benefit our Nation's children and their schools. This is only possible with your help and assistance.

This is primarily a character education program which emphasizes the power of a positive attitude, with the background theme of overcoming challenges. Students will become educated on life's perceptions and possibilities.
"I wanted you to know that you touched me in a way that no one has ever done before. You delivered your speech so well, and the example you used about the wall with the nails really hit home with me. What you said is very true: when someone is teased, it's like driving a nail through their heart. No matter how much someone can apologize, the hole from that person will always be there. Paul, you are an angel sent to inspire people and open as many eyes as you possibly can. I look up to you, respect you, and admire you. Thank you for everything you did for me today. I will never forget you." Jaimie, 10th Grader, Oak Ridge, N.J.

NEW JERSEY SCHOOLS RECEIVE SECOND YEAR OF FUNDING FOR SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
National Endowment for the Humanities and Dodge Foundation extend partnership WASHINGTON, D.C., June 12, 2000 - The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Morristown, N.J.-based Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation have agreed for a second year to support the Humanities Scholar in Residence Program now in place in New Jersey schools. The program brings outside humanities educators into selected New Jersey schools to serve as consultants for improving the schools' humanities curriculum. The NEH-Dodge Humanities Scholars in Residence Program is open to public middle and high schools in New Jersey. The application deadline is October 16, 2000. The program is a pioneering effort to help schools rethink how they teach history, literature, and foreign languages and cultures-the subjects known as the humanities. Dodge provided $50,000 for the program in the 1999-2000 academic year, with grants of $10,000 to each of five schools, and will make identical contributions to five additional schools for next academic year. NEH administers the program and conducts the review process. "The Humanities Scholar in Residence Program taps the expertise of master educators to enrich the K-12 learning environment," said NEH Chairman William R. Ferris. "Before the NEH-Dodge partnership, this idea had never before been tried in a systematic way. Dodge has shown great leadership in education by coming forward with funding for the program, and we at NEH see our partnership as a model for providing K-12 educational enrichment in each state."

Mid-Atlantic COSEE
Rutgers' Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences (IMCS), is heading a federally funded effort to educate a broad spectrum of the Mid-Atlantic population about varying aspects of ocean science. IMCS is the lead institution in the six-member Mid-Atlantic Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE).
Formed under a five-year, $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Rutgers' partners in the Mid-Atlantic COSEE are Stevens Institute of Technology's Center for Improved Engineering and Science Education, New York Aquarium, Hampton University, the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science of the College of William and Mary. The group won the NSF funding in a year-long competitive process. The Mid-Atlantic COSEE is one of six such collaborative centers being established on the East, West and Gulf coasts to produce materials and programs and help develop school curricula to promote lifelong learning about the ocean sciences. The centers will attempt to reach a broad audience including K-12 teachers, K-16 students, coastal managers, families and diverse groups that normally receive little exposure to marine science.
During the five-year effort, each regional COSEE will produce its own set of materials and programs. Members of the Mid-Atlantic center are planning to collaborate on Web sites, on-line learning, media supplements, face-to-face programs, teacher training, internships and expanded public access to ocean observing systems and data. The Center will provide training and resources like the COOL Classroom www.coolclassroom.org that link students to on-going marine science research
