About NJEDge.Net NJEDge.Net
, a non-profit corporation of the New Jersey Presidents' Council, is a broadband statewide network designed to enhance the teaching, research and public service missions of New Jersey's colleges and universities. The range of capabilities, resources and services offer economies of scale, provide expanded opportunities for integrating emerging technologies, and promote new forms of inter-institutional collaboration. This private, statewide infrastructure effectively "raises the bar" for high performance data and video capabilities across the state's three LATA boundaries and extends the reach of higher education to off-campus learners, K-12, as well as corporate and community constituents. Verizon Network Integration Corp Verizon New Jersey, Inc ., and Verizon Select Services, Inc. are technology partners in providing the custom telecommunications infrastructure for the NJEDge.Net data and video backbone. Data and video equipment vendors include Cisco, Polycom and First Virtual Communications. The custom IP-VPN network for NJEDge.Net deploys Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology across the state. The New Jersey Virtual University , an integral part of NJEDge.Net, will demonstrate how the state's colleges and universities are fully integrating technology to meet workforce training and education requirements, as well as the needs of a steadily growing number of high school graduates, and adults seeking lifelong learning opportunities. The institutions are building on the state's wealth of academic and high-tech corporate resources to move New Jersey to the forefront of technology-mediated education

2. Standards For Required Professional Development Of Teachers

Standards for Required Professional Development of Teachers PREAMBLE The New Jersey Professional Teaching Standards Board believes that educators must be dedicated to a continuous plan of professional development that begins with their preservice activities, that continues with their induction into the profession, and that extends through the life of their professional career in education through on-going and sustained professional development endeavors. We further believe that effective educators are life-long learners, that professional development must be an on-going process of refining skills, inquiring into practice, and developing new methods. The professional strengths and accomplishments of the school faculty at large must work to complement the learning needs and requirements of the entire student population. Professional development activities must also complement both the needs of the educator and the goals and objectives of the school district. Further, these activities must focus on the conditions which affect student learning in order for teachers to develop the knowledge and expertise needed to enable students to function as independent thinkers and creative learners both in the school community and in the larger environment of society as a whole. In addition, professional development must engage each educator in a collegial and collaborative dialogue with other educators and education partners to broaden the knowledge and expertise needed to guide students toward the successful attainment and mastery of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and to create supportive and effective schools.

HIV policy, staff development, and curriculum in New Jersey middle and high schools New Jersey Department of Education HIV/AIDS prevention program in-depth evaluation Policy, staff development and curriculum issues were the focus of the in-depth evaluation designed and implemented by CABER Evaluation Consultation Center (EC ) staff working with the New Jersey Department of Education. A representative random sample of middle and high schools was selected from a pool of 870 schools, yielding 430 schools in 294 districts. Data were collected from superintendents, principals, lead health teachers, and HIV/AIDS teachers. Results showed that the vast majority of districts complied with mandates regarding placement, sequence, and age-appropriate instruction. Forty percent of schools used skills-based instruction. Teacher training was related to instructional practice (e.g., more comprehensive instruction; broader coverage; and initiation of skills-based methods). Multiple policy, staff development, and curriculum recommendations for program improvement were generated. Findings, conclusions, and recommendations for program improvement were written in summary reports and submitted to NJDOE. Select findings are further discussed in a research article under review for publication.

January 13, 2003 A Position Statement on: Recommendations for Change Chapter 122 Manual of Requirements for Child Care Centers
Introduction/Position
Licensing regulations for child care can play an important role in building an infrastructure to support quality early care and education programs. While licensing regulations ensure an “adequate” threshold of health and safety, many states are now setting standards through licensing requirements that raise the expectations for service delivery. Research has shown that the quality of care and education in an early childhood program (serving children below six years of age) and out-of-school-time programs is directly related to the educational background and experiences of the teachers. The Professional Standards Working Committee of the New Jersey Professional Development Center for Early Care and Education developed the Core Knowledge and Competency Areas for early care and education professionals working in the State of New Jersey in October 2001. Included in this document is a Career Lattice.
