Major Initiative for Newark Schools
Several months ago, Ruby Green from the Newark Public School District, approached PCA-NJ. She wanted to bring our parent education program, EPIC (Every Person Influences Children) to the parents using the Parent Resource Centers in her district. With initial support from the Nicholson Foundation and Essex County government , PCA-NJ completed an application to the Pascale Sykes Foundation to support a five-year effort. On May 21, we received preliminary approval for the grant. Over the next five years, hundreds of parents in the Newark Schools will participate in workshops in their own schools, and neighborhoods. Our gratitude to the Nicholson Foundation, Essex County and the Pascale Sykes Foundation for enabling us serve the parents and children of New Jersey’s largest city. The Golf Tournament was a Sucess

Background The Tri-State Regional LASER Site serves the school districts of the State of New Jersey and selected districts in southeastern Pennsylvania and south-central Connecticut. Client districts include both large, urban school districts and small, suburban and rural school districts.
Coalition Members The Tri-State Regional LASER Site is a consortium of diverse institutions:
  • Bristol-Myers Squibb Company —a large pharmaceutical company—began contributing to the reform of elementary science education in 1993. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Center for Science Education sponsors professional development training sessions for teachers in client school districts. The Merck Institute for Science Education The New Jersey Statewide Systemic Initiative (NJSSI)  provides logistical support and promotes professional development opportunities. Building Bridges to the Future Consortium  brings together school districts, scientific corporations, and science organizations in central New Jersey, including Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, the Invention Factory Science Center, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Cyanamid, FMC Corporation, and Union Camp Corporation. The Consortium provides training sessions for scientists and engineers in client school districts.

Office of Special Education The office implements state and federal laws and regulations governing special education to ensure that pupils with disabilities in New Jersey receive full educational opportunities. It provides statewide leadership through the development of policy and implementation documents and provides guidance to school districts and parents regarding the implementation of special education programs and services. The office is responsible for administering all federal funds received by the state for educating pupils with disabilities ages 3 through 21. It also monitors the delivery of special education programs operated under state authority, provides mediation services to parents and school districts, processes hearings with the Office of Administrative Law, and conducts complaint investigations requested by the public. In addition, the office funds four learning resource centers ( LRCs ) that provide schools and parents with information services, materials circulation, technical assistance, consultation services and production services. The office also plans and implements program and personnel development activities in areas such as implementing the least restrictive environment provision, planning the transition of students with disabilities from school to adulthood, planning programs and services for preschool children with disabilities, developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and accessing individual rights and entitlements.
