Lake Hopatcong Fishing: A General Guide There is a classic image of a solitary man who has spent all winter tying his own flies venturing hip-deep into icy early April waters in pursuit of the trout of his dreams. Fishing is indeed a passion for many, but the sport is also an ideal activity for regular dads, moms and kids. In fact, women hold the state records for both smallmouth bass and brown trout, both out of Round Valley Reservoir in Hunterdon County. And, of course, kids and fish go way, way back. Kids sometimes have an uncanny intuition about what will work with fish. At the very least a family fishing trip will get you close to the marvelous waterways of the Skylands; and close to each other. If you're serious about coming home with food for a week or something for over the mantle, a good guide can be a real plus on a fishing trip, especially if you're not too familiar with a waterway. Take Eugene Neiderlander of Fish Assured for example. Neiderlander has been guiding fishermen (and their families) up and down the Delaware River from Belvidere to the Delaware Water Gap for over 15 years. He knows the Delaware (a prime fishing spot for anglers of all stripes), and he knows where the fish are. In fact, he guarantees fish; if you don't land a lunker, he'll take money off your next trip with him.

Located on Cape May Harbor, at the southern tip of New Jersey, the Nature Center provides easy access to beach and march habitats. The harbor is only a few minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. The New Jersey Department of Fish, Game and Wildlife has designated the area across from the Nature Center as a critical wildlife habitat. This h)abitat provides a unique opportunity for the general public to view and learn about the beauty and wonders of plants and animals in South Jersey. The Nature Center approch to teaching is that the student is the scientist. Often this is the studebt's first experience with science. They may get to use a microscope, conduct an experiment, or use a particular field sampling equipment for the first time. By providing a good first impression, utilizing both math and science, the Nature Center hopes to stimulate the mind and interest in the sciences. Older students also benefit from programs at the Center. They are able to experience the written word to better understand animal behavior, scientific concepts and environmental awareness.

    SCHOOLS IN ACTION
New Jersey teachers have expressed that the most effective teaching includes curriculum materials that reflect New Jersey-specific information as well provide opportunities for students to participate in learning experiences that reflect relevant issues. Curriculum development, coupled with teacher and student education, provides a powerful way to introduce this audience to the wonder of migration and the resources that researchers use to monitor nocturnal migration. It provides not only teachers, but students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to connect the needs of migratory songbirds to the actions that people take within their communities.
