Position Statement - 2003 ID #03-34 Statement on Proposed Graduation Requirements to the New Jersey State Board of Education (To Be Presented At Public Hearing) STATEMENT OF ANDREW BLELLOCH, COORDINATOR FOR NEW JERSEY, AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, TO THE NEW JERSEY BOARD OF EDUCATION, SETEMBER 17, 2003 Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, members of the New Jersey Board of Education. My name is Andrew Blelloch. I am the State Government Relations Coordinator for New Jersey for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). I have been a resident of West Windsor, New Jersey for the past 32 years and my four sons all graduated from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School. Three of them went on to obtain engineering degrees.
On September 2, a letter from the ASME Sections in New Jersey, representing over 3,300 members of the society in the state, was delivered to the Board expressing their concern that technology was not being adequately addressed in the proposed graduation requirements. The purpose of this address is to express our concerns in greater detail. The revised proposed graduation requirements of August 6 (6A:8-5.1) states: "Technological literacy, consistent with Core Curriculum Content Standards, (should be) integrated throughout the curriculum…." This statement implies that the Board will not fully adopt a separate core curriculum in technology mandated by Assembly Bill 2169.

PLEASANTVILLE, New Jersey (AP) A middle school basketball coach who presented a "Crybaby Award" trophy to a 13-year-old player has been fired from his coaching job, and the board of education wants him out entirely, officials said Wednesday. James Guillen, 24, must make a public apology, attend sensitivity training and hold a second banquet to give out a proper award, School Superintendent Edwin Coyle said. But he said he opposed firing him as a teacher. The boy's father, Terrence Philo Sr., said that just before the April 24 banquet, Guillen called the boy and told him he would be getting a special trophy. At the banquet, the teen watched as all his teammates received trophies or certificates. He was then called up to receive his award, and the coach told him he was getting a Crybaby Award because "he begged to get in the game, and all he did was whine."

SUMMIT POOL - OPENING SATURDAY JUNE 19 June 10, 2004 The pool will open to all members on Saturday, June 19th. The pool contractor has worked every day, including Memorial Day, to complete the project. Unfortunately, over the past two weeks, wet weather conditions have consistently impaired the contractor’s efforts to complete the process of installing tile in the refurbished pool. In turn, this has delayed other work that must be performed before the pool can be filled with water. Therefore, the Board of Recreation must reluctantly accept the contractor’s recommendation that the June 12th general opening be postponed to June 19; weather permitting. Any additional information regarding the status of the pool project will be announced on TV-36, and published on the city web site, www.cityofsummit.org or if you have specific questions, contact the Board of Recreation at 908-277-2932 Welcome We hope you enjoy the new City of Summit web site. NJMEA was formed in 1973, making it one of the oldest environmental organizations in New Jersey. In 2001 eastern Pennsylvania became an affiliate of the NJMEA. Our focus is on the study of the marine biome, particularly as it effects and is affected by citizens in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Because New Jersey is bordered on three sides by water and eastern Pennsylvania shares the Delaware watershed with New Jersey, the importance of this extensive shoreline in our lives should be explored and emphasized in school curriculua. Our active organization has met the challenge by offering educational materials, workshops, seminars, guest speakers, and our official publication the Sea Horse. OAS_AD('Top'); New Jersey Stands Up for Founding Fathers Tuesday, February 12, 2002 By Amy C. Sims OAS_AD('Middle'); But months of hearings still lie ahead to flesh out the details of precisely what early American history kids in New Jersey will learn, and what will go the educational way of George Washington's chopped-down cherry tree. The controversy began when the outgoing education commissioner omitted the names of the Founding Fathers in a draft of the state's proposed history standards. That action was sharply criticized by State Sen. Gerald Cardinale, who accused the educational establishment of wanting to "hijack" history. "They've got the tools and the authority, and if we don't call public attention to it they will be successful," he said. Cardinale drafted a joint resolution, which has similar powers of a bill, stating any teacher who doesn't teach about the founding fathers would lose tenure and employment. State Assemblyman Joseph Pennacchio introduced similar legislation. William L. Librera, who became commissioner in January, reversed the board's earlier action, and in doing so clearly stated his priorities.
