Tools for Schools
New England's school buildings suffer from a variety of environmental problems, including poor maintenance and inappropriate products, that make our children ill. EPA's Tools for Schools EPA HQ program helps educators identify ways to improve indoor air quality. According to a 1995 General Accounting Office report, more than half the schools in this country have poor ventilation and significant sources of pollution. In 2000 and beyond, EPA New England will enlist an additional 200 schools a year to undertake the Tools for Schools program. For information on how to get involved in this program in New England, contact Eugene Benoit , Tools For Schools Program Coordinator, or our Customer Call Center at 888-372-7341.

EPA New England Administrator Announces Children First Campaign
Contact: Amy Miller, EPA Press Office (617-918-1042) For Immediate Release: Sept.18, 2000 Release # 00-09-08 MANCHESTER, NH – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's New England Office today in Manchester announced a $1 million initiative aimed at protecting children from environmental health threats in the places where they spend most of their time - in school, at home, and outdoors. The announcement was made at a Safe House, a new residence in downtown Manchester that will provide safe, temporary housing for families while their homes are being renovated for lead paint or asthma allergens. The initiative, called Children First, includes $500,000 of new investments to combat lead poisoning in New England cities, $200,000 to improve air quality and reduce toxic exposure at 200 schools, and $225,000 in programs to curb skyrocketing asthma rates.

Nashua NH was named twice Money Magazine's Best Place to Live In America
The self-proclaimed "Gate City" Nashua lies just north of the Massachusetts border and follows the western bank of the Merrimack River. New Hampshire's second-largest city has twice been named "Money' magazine's " Best Place to Live in America ," and is the only city in the country ever to win this honor twice . A low crime rate and low unemployment coupled with excellent schools and up-to-date healthcare facilities were all reasons cited for this ranking in 1987 and 1997. These and many other great features make this city of 83,000 an excellent community in which to live and work. The village of Nashua was an early textile center. By 1836, Nashua Corporation had built three cotton mills and was producing 9.3 million yards of cotton cloth annually on 710 looms. The city of Nashua was chartered in 1852, and before the Civil War six railroad lines crossed the city with 56 trains entering and departing daily. After World War 11, the textile mills moved south and the city gradually developed a diversified industry, particularly high technology and retail. S ince a commercial development boom in the 1980's, the city has served as a shopping mecca with several malls and plazas for those fleeing Massachusetts sales taxes. Not to be outdone, downtown Nashua hosts several seasonal festivals and parties, a myriad of activities from evening concerts at Greeley Park to parades and shows all over the city. Ethnic restaurants and posh specialty gift shops have made the downtown area a popular destination year-round, in addition to an extensive retail industry; the city also hosts several major high-tech companies such as Compaq Computer Corporation, Oracle, and Sanders, a Lockheed-Martin Company.

Salem is 28 miles from the seacoast, between Concord, NH (35 miles to the north) and Boston, Massachusetts (26 miles to the south) and just an hour ride to the Lakes and Mountains region. S alem is still basically a rural, predominantly residential and totally charming New England community, however, the schools, the recreation, the business, the activity and the town services are all excellent, as they must be to satisfy more than 25,000 residents. If Salem, New Hampshire had a middle name, it would likely be "Recreation", because Salem has it in abundance. There are many lovely lakes for boating and swimming; there are parks and fields and conservation areas; Field of Dreams Playground, Canobie Lake Amusement Park, and much more.

NEW COLORADO EDUCATION LAWS IMPACT CHARTER SCHOOL AUTHORIZATION.
The Colorado State Board of Education will have the power to approve charter schools under a new bill signed into law by Gov. Bill Owens. Under the new charter program, charter school organizers will be able to bypass local school districts that reject or refuse to hear requests to set up charter schools. The law, created in response to several districts where local boards have restricted new charter schools, also creates a charter school institute as an agency of the state department of education. Two additional laws were also approved concerning charter schools. One requires greater accountability for charter schools and their authorizing districts, while the other creates a system for monitoring student academic progress over time.

Educational Talent Search
Educational Talent Search (ETS) helps eligible students in grades six through twelve prepare for college and a rewarding career. Participants don't need straight A's, an ear for music, or an awesome slam dunk, just the desire to work hard and to succeed. ETS is federally funded and is free to participants who meet income guidelines. Many are the first members of their familes to attend college. Program graduates are attending 155 different colleges and vocational schools. They each receive, on average, more than $10,000 per year in financial aid. In New Hampshire, ETS counselors provide services in more than fifty high schools and eight middle schools. ETS staff members collaborate with guidance counselors, helping and motivating students to succeed in middle and high school, to explore career options, and to research colleges. ETS counselors guide students through the process of applying for admission and financial aid. The earlier students enroll in the program, the more they stand to gain.
The Middle School Program Working with students in grades six, seven, and eight, middle school counselors concentrate on helping adolescents to build self-esteem and to set their sights on a college education. Students also explore many different careers touring workplaces such as the Channel 11 studios, newspaper offices, hospitals, and superior courts. Specific ETS services to middle schoolers include:

"Oh what the heck, there's always the Tech." This old North Country saying mirrored the sentiments of many high school seniors who were either unsure of where to go after graduation or whose grades didn't indicate a traditional four-year college track. The joke, albeit with a serious undertone, was about their last resort option - vocational school. But vocational schools of old have changed. Gradually, purposefully, they've transitioned into comprehensive community technical colleges. Once seen as technical/vocational schools, they are now viewed as institutions of higher education.
