ETS Provides Guidance on Teacher Certification Issues for New Hampshire Board of Education
Testing Experts Counsel Against Using Unsound, Unproven Alternative Test Princeton, N.J. (April 13, 2004) In written comments requested by the New Hampshire State Board of Education and delivered today, Patricia McAllister, ETS's Executive Director of Public Affairs, said ETS's PRAXIS licensure tests, currently used as part of New Hampshire's licensure process, are a better alternative than an American Board for the Certification of Teacher Education (ABCTE) exam under consideration by the board as a means of certifying teachers who take a nontraditional or alternate route to the classroom. "Unlike PRAXIS, the ABCTE test is under development and has not been used to license a single teacher in the United States," McAllister wrote. "Little information is publicly available about this test. The ABCTE test would permit someone who passes an unknown, untried and unproven test, to walk into a classroom and teach students with no preparation or experience in actual teaching skills." In response to the board's effort to certify teachers through alternate routes, ETS noted that the

Information about graduate programs in earth science, geology, hydrology, and oceanography is available online, as well as general information about graduate study at UNH. In addition to the introductory information presented here, the department has its own home page.
Four degrees are offered within the Department of Earth Sciences: Bachelor of Science in Geology and Hydrology , and Bachelor of Arts in Earth Sciences and Earth Science Teaching Undergraduate course descriptions for the department are available on-line.
The courses offered in the Department of Earth Sciences cover the broad spectrum of earth sciences, with emphases on geology, hydrology, geochemistry, and oceanography. The curriculum encompasses a group of related studies concerned with an understanding of the Earth: its size, shape, and constitution; the processes that are now, or have formerly been, at work upon its surface, including tectonic cycles, ocean currents, the hydrologic cycle, energy flows, biogeochemical cycles, and climate changes; and the origin and evolution of life. Studies in these areas are based on a foundation of basic mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The need for people trained in the earth sciences has been increasing in response to society's growing concern with sound environmental and resource management, including the disposal of waste on land and in the atmosphere and oceans; the management of water resources; the development of energy and mineral resources; and the assessment of environmental hazards. In addition, the demand for well-trained secondary school teachers of earth sciences has been steadily increasing.
