Research shows that public investments in education and development are more than seven times greater during the school-aged years ($5,410 per child) than during the early learning years ($740 per child). The years between birth and age 5 are the most important for a child's brain growth and development. During this period children are adjusting and becoming more familiar with the world around them. The actual growth of the brain occurs at this time and a foundation for learning has begun. It is during this time that a child's education and quality of care has the most impact.

E-Mail This Article Published on Saturday, January 17, 2004 by the Boston Globe Facing Questions, Clark Backs Army School by Joanna Weiss CONCORD, N.H. Retired General Wesley K. Clark sometimes downplays his Army background, and criticizes the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays. But there is one military institution he vigorously defends: the controversial academy once known as the US Army School of the Americas. Opposition to the school, which trains military officers from Latin American countries, has long been a cause celebre among some Democrats and liberal activists, who say the academy has trained some of the most notorious criminals of the region and teaches skills that Latin American armies sometimes use against their own citizenry. Supporters of the school point to reforms from the 1990s, and say its courses teach foreign soldiers about democracy and human rights. Also See:

  • Village in the town of Rockingham Windham County Altitude ASL: 309 feet Named for Colonel Benjamin Bellows, one of the original grantees of Rockingham . Vermont tends think of him as one of her own, but in fact he lived across the river in Walpole, New Hampshire. The colonel gained his rank in the British army, serving in several of the wars against the French in North America. His last military service was in the colonial cause at the battles of Hubbardton and Bennington A skilled surveyor, Bellows surveyed most of the towns on both sides of the Connecticut River that were later granted by Benning Wentworth . The Colonel is said to have held title to some 9,000 acres in Vermont and New Hampshire at the time of his death in 1777. The village has served as a river and overland crossroads for commerce and travel by foot, stagecoach, riverboat, train, truck and automobile. Its "golden eras" blossomed with the local application of new technologies, from canal to railroad to paper and farm machinery manufacturing.

    New Hampshire's Home Education Law
with Commentary by Doris Hohensee (doris@mainstream.net) I.Summary of objections:
  • Mere compliance with N.H.'s home education law results in a loss of parental rights. Although courts have upheld the primary right and obligation of parents to raise and educate their children, New Hampshire law recognizes only "the primary right and obligation of a parent to CHOOSE the appropriate educational alternative for a child under his care and supervision, AS PROVIDED BY LAW." Parents' right to educate their children has now been reduced to a choice of State-approved State-regulated educational alternatives and then only "as prescribed by law."
  • N.H.'s law requires parental 'application' not 'notification' to the State.

Nathaniel G. Palmer built his spacious home around the site of a smaller home believed to be the residence of his father. His unique, Greek-Revival home, overlooking Crystal Lake and Eaton’s famous Little White Church , was documented in the North Country Council’s Historic Buildings Inventory.
Nathaniel soon began taking in travelers, as well as the many visitors that came to spend their summers enjoying the mountains and lakes his house became known as The Palmer House. After Nathaniel’s death in 1899, his wife, Mary, continued to take in guests and their son, Frank continued this until the 1940’s.
In the late 1940’s, The Palmer House was purchased by the Buckelew family who started Camp Star Acres. It was later turned into a co-ed boarding school and was incorporated as The Palmer House School in 1961. The school closed in 1974.
