Tobacco Use Among Middle and High School Students - New Hampshire, 19952001
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States ( ). Because 80% of adult smokers began smoking as minors ( ), efforts to prevent smoking initiation have focused on adolescents. To examine trends in smoking prevalence among adolescents, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services analyzed data from the New Hampshire Youth Risk Behavior Survey (NHYRBS) and the New Hampshire Youth Tobacco Survey (NHYTS) during 19952001. This report summarizes the results of that analysis, which indicate that smoking prevalence in New Hampshire has declined among both middle and high school students. When fully operational, New Hampshire's comprehensive tobacco-prevention and -control program should lead to further reductions in smoking among adolescents and begin to decrease smoking among adults. NHYRBS was conducted in grades 912 in odd-numbered years during 19952001. Although survey results for 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2001 were reviewed, weighted data were available only from 1995 ( Table 1 Table 1 ). The survey used a two-stage cluster sample design; schools were selected with probability proportional to size, and classrooms in schools were selected at random. All students in selected classrooms were eligible to participate. The 2001 survey was divided into two separate samples, one for middle schools (grades 68) and one for high schools (grades 912). Analysis of middle school data was restricted to grades 78. In all surveys, local parental consent procedures were followed before survey administration.

Towns, schools, a variety of civic groups throughout the Granite State, and Ski NH make it possible for many New Hampshire kids to take advantage of the state's special opportunities for winter recreation. These programs are designed to enable more and more kids to make sure that skiing, New Hampshire's Official State Sport, is a part of their childhood. Social Centers Enjoy Trip to Loon Mountain, New Hampshire March 12, 2003
Eleven lucky young people enjoyed a trip to Loon Mountain Ski Resort the weekend of March 8th. The children are all participants in the Social Centers' School Age Childcare program, which each year chooses a group of the program's older participants to take on a weekend trip to New Hampshire.
For many of the children, it was their first time out of the state and their first visit to a ski resort and ride on a ski lift. Throughout the year, the School Age program runs fundraising activities, including dances and candy sales, to keep the cost of the trip low and affordable for all.
While at Loon Mountain, the children and the School Age staff that served as chaperones stayed in a townhouse and participated in many activities. The children went swimming and enjoyed a dip in a mountain Jacuzzi, went snow tubing on the mountain, did some sightseeing, had breakfast in a local Bed and Breakfast and enjoyed a chance to visit New Hampshire.
The School Age Childcare program provides licensed after-school (full day on vacations) childcare programming for approximately 150 children between the ages of 5-14 at two sites in East Boston, Central Square and Orient Heights. Program activities include homework help, literacy activities and tutoring, field trips, arts and crafts, cooperative games, sports and recreation, peer leadership and self-esteem building activities and social activities.

Public Libraries. New Hampshire, where the first free tax-supported public library opened to all in 1833, has 232 public libraries today. With the exception of the residents of several hamlets in the geographically isolated northern part of the state, 99.1% of the state's population of 1,109,252 is directly served by local public libraries. Local support for public libraries has continued to increase with the average per capita support going from $14.76 in 1989 to $17.48 in 1996. New Hampshire does not have any regional or county library systems, but it does have a variety of voluntary library cooperatives. The Greater Manchester Integrated Cooperative Library System (GMILCS) is the largest automation cooperative in the state and is now serving more than one quarter of the state's population. On September 16, 2002, a local county health department reported to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) four cases of cough illness among workers at an oil refinery. Following an investigation by IDPH, 17 individuals from the oil refinery were diagnosed with pertussis from August 1-October 9, 2002. Additionally, 7 patients with pertussis were identified in the local community from August 30-October 11, 2002. All 24 patients received treatment with antibiotics and there were no deaths. Among recommended childhood immunizations, pertussis is the only vaccine preventable disease with increased number of cases in the United States during the last 20 years. The number of pertussis cases in adults has risen substantially since the 1980s. Pertussis should be considered in adults with a cough illness lasting > 2 weeks with paroxysms of coughing, inspiratory "whoop," or post-tussive vomiting.
