Where one can disappear into the trees for an afternoon hike, or merely drive along the highways and byways, gazing skyward at the mountains that surround you. The natural attractions are as plentiful here as the man-made ones, but it is the spirit of this place that brings us back time and again. The ways to enjoy the beauty of the region are too numerous to count. Our journey through these mountains could begin with the Appalachian Trail as it makes its way through some of most difficult terrain on its way from Maine to Georgia. We could begin at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest, where a hiker can find 48 mountains that reach 4000 feet or more. We could drive along a scenic byway known as the Kancamagus Highway, a 34-mile road that runs from Lincoln at the Pemigewasset River to Conway. Visitors to this area are struck with breathtaking vistas of lush green hills, white picket fences, fragile old barns along curving roadsides and covered bridges spanning rivers and decades. But this country is about more than picturesque perfection. It is about the honor of the Ivy League, present in the town of Hanover at Dartmouth College. It is about a lake unharmed by the hustle and bustle of days of old, when affluent visitors were transported by steamship to the grand hotels to spend their summers away from the sweltering, dirty, misery of the city. It is about the mountains surrounding that lake that serve as a backdrop for all whose summer memories include jumping off a quiet dock into the cool, clear, dark waters on a lazy, hot summer day or flying down the sparkling, white slopes during a winter school vacation. New Hampshire information
Mom wants to see mountains. Dad's got his heart set on boating and fishing on a tranquil lake. The kids are clamoring for amusement-park rides. Can this family's vacation be saved? If their destination is New Hampshire, the answer is a definite "yes." New Hampshire offers up a taste of everything most vacationers seek in a travel destination, and you'll find yourself well satisfied after sampling all the state has to offer. First settled by Europeans in 1623, New Hampshire gained its separate identity from Massachusetts in 1679. New Hampshire delegates were the first to vote for the colonies' Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and the state continues to be in the political public eye every four years when it hosts the first presidential primary vote.

The beauty and diversity of New Hampshire is unrivaled. From the Seacoast and Mount Washington, to the natural beauty and wildlife, New Hampshire offers something for everyone. The following are just a few of the wonderful destinations that comprise the unique and diverse character of New Hampshire.
THE MONADNOCK REGION
The Monadnock Region is named for Mount Monadnock, one of the most frequently climbed mountains in the world. Besides winter sports like skiing, ice-skating and more, the area is also know for its year round arts and cultural offerings. The MacDowell Colony, the oldest and largest artist colony in the United States, provides a refuge where artists, writers, composers, visual artists, photographers, printmakers, filmmakers and architects from all over the world come to the colony to work and enjoy the experience of living in a community of gifted artists. Choose from any of the Monadnock Region's quintessential New England towns and villages beginning with Keene, a bustling college town and a shopping center for the entire region. The nearby towns of Hinsdale, Chesterfield and Winchester include Pisgah State Park, a 13,500-acre undeveloped park that draws hikers, mountain bikers, hunters, anglers, snowmobilers and cross country skiers.

Covered Bridges
Picked by PC Computing Magazine as one of the "Best 1001 Internet Sites" N ew Hampshire has over 50 covered bridges.
Included in this proud symbol of our heritage are both the small and large. From quaint Langdon-Drewsville bridge with its 36 foot span to the Cornish-Windsor bridge, 460 foot long - the longest covered bridge in the America. When you sojourn through New Hampshie on your quest to see the Covereds, keep an eye out for this sign. Many, though not all of the covered bridges have these along the roadside to help you find your way. It's not just roads that employ covered bridges, in fact many of the bridges have been converted to "pedestrian traffic only" (a concession to these busier times,) but also railroads. In the listing below you'll find a few of these also. The bridges are constructed of wood timbers and pegs, with metal hardware in the later examples. Most employ the truss designs of Town, Howe, Burr, Haupt among others. As a point of interest, you may wonder why the bridges over the Connecticut River are listed only in New Hampshire.

All the lakes and ponds reflect the vibrant colors of autumn Lakes Region, NH New England is world famous for the beautiful colors of fall, and the Lakes Region is no exception. The Lakes Region offers fall visitors a unique canvas with its 273 lakes and ponds reflecting the vibrant reds, oranges and golds of autumn. One of the most popular ways to view the foliage is on any number of the scenic drives in the region. In fact it is difficult to drive anywhere in the region without enjoying beautiful scenery the Lakes Region Tour has been designated a New Hampshire Scenic and Cultural Byway. One example is Route 109 from Moultonborough to Wolfeboro, which offers stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding foothills. The Lakes Region Association can also recommend a wide array of tours that are great for spending the afternoon "getting lost." Visit our special packages section to see what our country inns, bed & breakfasts and hotels offer. A visitor to the Lakes Region can spend a number of days exploring any one of the five major lakes in the area: Newfound Lake, Ossipee Lake, Squam Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee and Winnisquam Lake. Each area features not only beautiful lakes and ponds, but also spectacular vistas for viewing the foliage. Foliage Tours are popular in the autumn and travel through each of the lake regions. Tours by boat are also common, and the M/S Mount Washington, Doris E, Sophie C, Winnipesaukee Water Taxi, Winnipesaukee Belle and Millie B all offer foliage cruises. For those who prefer their own route rentals are available for boats, canoes and kayaks.
