Who We Are
Special Olympics New Hampshire (SONH) is a non-profit organization providing sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental challenges. Currently 2,500 participants and thousands of volunteers, friends and family members take part in SONH activities.
Our Philosophy
SONH is founded on the belief that people with mental challenges can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with mental and physical challenges. SONH believes that consistent training is indispensable to the development of sports skills and that competition among those with equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing those skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Our History The Special Olympics concept was born in the early 1960's when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp for people with mental challenges. She observed the great joy campers experienced when playing sports and resolved to create a program that would both meet physical fitness needs and boost self-esteem.

Bridging Time New Hampshire has more than 50 covered bridges that are picture-perfect for waiting out a summer rain, watching a snowfall, or for admiring the reflection of fall foliage in the clear water.
A list of covered bridges by region is given below. For more information on covered bridges please visit the covered bridges section of New Hampshire Historical Resources Division website
Covered Bridges Facts

Some people tell romanticized stories about these covered roadways often called “courting” or “kissing” bridges. But the reason for the roof is more prosaic: it was to protect the bridge's timbers and flooring.
Each covered bridge is unique, a reflection of its maker’s aesthetic—and budget. The less expensive bridges had no sidewalks, while the more elaborate were made with two lanes with the roof raised high enough to allow a loaded hay wagon to pass under it. There’s the Cornish-Windsor bridge, a jaw-dropping 449 feet, 5 inches long, spanning the Connecticut River between Cornish, New Hampshire, and Windsor, Vermont. This silver-gray wooden wonder is the longest wooden bridge in the U.S. and the longest 2-span covered bridge in the world. Like many other New Hampshire towns, Cornish has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to covered bridges: it has four, as has Swanzey; while Bath, Pittsburg, Campton and Newport each have three. Andover, Langdon, Warner, Conway, Lincoln, North Woodstock, Hopkinton, Winchester and Lancaster each have an unmatched pair, while 17 towns have just one.

Regions in Brief Coastal New Hampshire Yes, New Hampshire has a coast18 miles (29km) of it. Here you'll find sand and surf, as well as the bonsai-perfect historic city of Portsmouth. The Upper Valley The Connecticut River Valley between Vermont and New Hampshire is a historic world unto itself, full of timeless villages, rolling hills, covered bridges, and the New England classic, Hanover, N.H., home to Dartmouth College. Lakes Region Lake WinnipesaukeeNew Hampshire's largestis the crown jewel of the state's Lakes Region, but other lakes and ponds scattered about here make up in charm what they lack in size. On Golden Pond was filmed here, but the region's fame as a timeless summer retreat far predates the movie. White Mountains Since the mid-1800s, New Hampshire's White Mountains have drawn travelers to its rugged, windswept peaks and forests dotted with glacial boulders and clear, rushing streams. You can find New England's best backcountry hiking and camping here.
