The City of Nashua, NH More about New Hampshire New Hampshire is the seventh smallest state in the nation, with an area of 9,283 sq mi, including 314 sq mi of inland waters. The state is roughly triangular in shape. Its greatest distance from north to south is 181 mi and its largest extent east to west is 94 mi. New Hampshire’s mean elevation is about 1,000 ft. New Hampshire was once covered by glaciers, the last of which receded 10,000 years ago. These glaciers greatly affected the landscape by rounding the mountains and creating hundreds of streams and lakes. In addition, much of New Hampshire is covered with rocks, boulders, and clays that were deposited by the glaciers. Although all of the state was covered by the glaciers, there are great differences among its natural regions.

Connecticut Lakes Region, New Hampshire
The Connecticut Lakes region of New Hampshire is an area that stretches from the town of Pittsburg up along state route 3 to the Canadian border. The area is well known for excellent hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. It encompases the three Connecticut Lakes. The largest of which, First Connecticut Lake, is the 3rd largest lake in the state of New Hampshire.
Moose
Moose are seen throughout the area along the sides of the roads and in certain wetland areas. The best chances for a moose sighting is along Rt 3 or "Moose Alley" as the locals call it. At night you will see a parade of cars going up and down the highway in search of them. Look along the roads for signs that the moose have created "licks" or "wallows". These are typically low spots along either side of the road. The moose will visit these spots almost anytime, but early evening or morning hours tend to be the best. The best strategy is to cruise along the road, slowly and carefully because moose can dart accross the road in front of you at any time. Your patience will reward you with some great moose viewing. If you do spot a moose please park well off the road. Route 3 is a busy highway with Canadian traffic and logging vehicles common. The local police have been known to cite drivers who fail to obey these rules.

Others try hiking on trails of every level of difficulty among the other peaks in the Presidential Range. Camping, canoeing, whitewater rafting, and skiing are also popular activities. Outlet shopping in the Conway area draws thousands each year.

New Hampshire. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) New Hampshire, the " Granite State"
Abbreviation:
NH One of the original 13 states (it entered the Union in 1788), New Hampshire was named after the English county of Hampshire. New Hampshire is called the "Granite State" because of its numerous granite quarries; the nickname may also reflect the state's attachment to tradition and its history of a frugal government. There are no general sales or individual income taxes, which fits with the state motto of "Live free or die". A relatively small state, New Hampshire plays a major role every four years in the presidential election, as it holds the first primary election. New Hampshire was first settled in 1623, just three years after the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts. New Hampshire's history is the story of the transformation of a wilderness to farmland and then to a thriving industrial society. Visitors to New Hampshire enjoy a great variety of recreational activities in six major vacation areas: the White Mountains region, the Lakes area, the Seacoast region, the Merrimack Valley area, the Monadnock region, and the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee area. The state offers rugged mountains, blue lakes, sandy beaches and quiet villages.
