    Geography Data
The U.S. Bureau of the Census works to provide data by geographic area most appropriate to its varied users. Primarily the Bureau provides data tabulation and presentation for the nation's legal entities: States, Counties, minor civil divisions, incorporated places, congressional districts and voting districts. However, data users aren't only high-level government officials and politicians; they also include numerous individuals, businesses, agencies at all levels of government, hospitals, charities, and religious organizations. To provide data that meets the needs of all these users the legally defined areas are then supplemented with geographic areas delineated by the Census Bureau, otherwise known as statistical areas . These include, but are not limited to Census Designated Places (CDP), census tracts, block numbering areas(BNA), block groups (BG), and census blocks. The NH State Data Center has developed this page to provide data users with information relative to New Hampshire's census geography, as well as additional links to related web sites. Some documents are being posted in Portable Document Format (PDF). To view PDF files, you will need to have the Acrobat Reader installed on your PC. The Reader is available for

Geography People Government ... Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] One of the original 13 states (it entered the Union in 1788), New Hampshire was named after the English county of Hampshire. New Hampshire is called the "Granite State" because of its numerous granite quarries; the nickname may also reflect the state's attachment to tradition and its history of a frugal government. There are no general sales or individual income taxes, which fits with the state motto of "Live free or die." A relatively small state, New Hampshire plays a major role every four years in the presidential election, as it holds the first primary election. New Hampshire's state bird is the purple finch and its capital is Concord. Joseph T. Scott. "Newhampshire." From United States Gazetteer This is one of the earliest American maps of New Hampshire from the first American gazetteer. Joseph T. Scott, a Philadelphia engraver and publisher, issued his gazetteer during the first days of American cartography. The maps of the new states and territories are all very detailed especially given the early age. Major roads and towns are indicated, as is some indication of the orography of the White Mountains. Eighteenth century script is enhanced by decorative flourishes in the title and the map is surrounded by a Federalist style border.
Samuel Lewis. "The State of New Hampshire. Compiled chiefly from Actual Surveys. By Samuel Lewis. 1794." From Mathew Carey's American Atlas The two most influential names in American cartography at the end of the eighteenth century were Mathew Carey and Samuel Lewis. Carey was the first major American publisher of maps and atlases, and his Atlas
John Reid. "The State of New Hampshire, Compiled chiefly from Actual Surveys. 1796."
