Return to Mentoring Information Categories List The author of this web site has been keeping track of state-level mentoring programs for years. During that time I have seen that it's: 1. Difficult to draw conclusions about the sum of state-level novice teacher programming, because it is in constant flux 2. Possible to look at state level activity from several different perspectives, because of the various and complex themes that weave through beginning teacher support systems. This report takes one view point in presenting and analyzing the patterns in state-wide mentoring and induction programming. That approach views mentoring on a continuum in which assistance of novice teachers is at one end of the continuum and assessment of novice teachers is on the other end. Necessarily, that perspective "colors" how this information is presented and analyzed. What is presented here is:
  • A chart summarizing some of the studies and illustrating the changing picture described above, plus references to all the studies I found.

Middle College A Proven Way to Recover Virginia High School Dropouts The Challenge Nearly one in ten adults in Virginia have entered the workforce without a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (GED). Given the record-level increases of projected Virginia high school students, the number of dropouts is expected to increase. Of the approximately 700,000 Virginians without a high school diploma, 150,000 of these individuals are between the ages of 18 and 24. As a group, therefore, these individuals will tend to live their lives in economic margins, earning and contributing less to state revenues. Middle College: A Proven Solution Middle Colleges will provide Virginia high school drop-outs between the ages of 18 and 24 an opportunity to attain a GED and enroll in a variety of quality, proven courses that will (1) enhance basic workforce skills through engagement in project-based learning, (2) participate in remedial courses (when necessary), (3) accumulate community college credits applicable towards a degree or certificate and (4) attain an ACT Work Keys workforce readiness certificate. Investment For additional information on Middle College, contact Dr. Glenn DuBois, Chancellor, Virginia Community College System at 804-819-4903 or

City Webmaster Roundup: Inside or Outside?
By Stephen Young Municipalities can design and maintain their own web sites, or they can find an outside vendor for the work. Which method is best? MuniNet recently contacted several city web administrators and asked about their experience. Of those who responded, many did the work in-house, some with the assistance of a vendor, while a couple reported relying completely on a vendor. Despite the different approaches, each municipality seemed to find satisfaction in their own arrangement. Some cities experimented with different formulas before finding an appropriate balance. In Ames, Iowa , initial reliance on a vendor didn't work out too well, according to Clare Bills, Public Relations Officer. "We started our site six years ago with only an outside firm. They were slow and sloppy and didn't edit their work. Their design also was a disaster and so we decided we could do better," said Bills. Now city staff handles the site, except for big design changes. Bills said the move made sense financially. "We save thousands each year by maintaining the web ourselves," she said. "The departments have a sense of ownership and can update the site daily. We've been able to put hundreds of items on the web that we probably wouldn't have if we were being charged $80/hr which is the going rate here."
