Mission Statement: Friends of Recovery, New Hampshire, is a statewide grassroots alliance of individuals who support recovery. Our goal is to eliminate the stigma of addiction through education and the recognition of the social and economic contributions of recovering people. Our purpose is to initiate change in legislation and resource allocation, raise awareness through public acknowledgment, and promote support by sharing experiences of recovering people, their families and friends. Primary goals are:
  • Reduce the number of people suffering from chemical addiction by advocating for adequate alcohol and other drug treatment and prevention resources.
To reduce the stigma associated with chemical dependency by providing education to the general public and policy makers. Educational activities will be designed to increase public knowledge and understanding of chemical addiction, to reduce the stigma of chemical dependency, and to provide information on the effectiveness of addiction recovery.
To develop a formal voice for clients, former clients, family members and communities by putting a face on recovery and by establishing an ongoing dialogue with government and private funding agencies, providers of services, policy makers and the general public.

July 25, 2001 The Honorable Philip T. McLaughlin
    New Hampshire Attorney General
    33 Capital St.
Concord, NH 03301 Dear Attorney General McLaughlin: Labbe's vicious assault on Mr. Phetakoune, an elderly man nearly half his size, deserves nothing less than prosecution as murder. Furthermore, this murder was more than an isolated incident. It was a racist and bigoted attack that needs to be prosecuted as a hate crime. News reports of Labbe's statements to both police and witnesses clearly show his attack on Mr. Phetakoune was racially-motivated. According to these reports, Labbe made the following racist remarks such as saying to police: "What's going on is that those Asians killed Americans and you won't do anything about it so I will. Call it payback." Labbe's own son is reported to have heard him say "So you like to kill Americans, why don't you try to kill me?" If remarks like this do not prove a hate crime, then nothing can. A hate crime such as the killing of Mr. Phetakoune affects more than just the victim and his family - it represents an attack against an entire community. The intentional murder of an individual just because of his race and ethnic background threatens all Asian Pacific Americans in New England.

ORONO - Educators and teachers from throughout the United States and Canada will gather at the University of New Hampshire in Durham on August 1-5 for the 20th annual National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) conference "Making Connections: Global Lessons from the Gulf of Maine." The keynote speaker for the conference will be Sylvia Earle, one of the world's leading marine biologists and renowned underwater explorer and global educator. Author of Sea Change - A Message of the Oceans, Earle will speak about the critical condition of the world's oceans and offer some suggestions for change. The opening general session features Richard Wheeler, a retired schoolteacher and naturalist who journeyed alone in a kayak from Newfoundland to Cape Cod, tracing the 1700-mile migration route of the now-extinct great auk. Wheeler, the subject of a Nova television special, will share his spectacular photography of the trip as well as insights he gained about the Gulf of Maine. Watershed Day is a special event scheduled for Friday, August 2, at Merrowvista Education Center in New Hampshire's Ossippee Mountains. At this 720-acre mountain site, conference participants will explore freshwater and land use issues that impact the Gulf of Maine. Sessions will include forest "best management practices," water quality monitoring, mapping techniques, watershed education programs, aquatic organisms, natural pollution control, and others. The day will end with a cruise and buffet on Lake Winnepesaukee aboard the M/S Mt. Washington.

The Division Faculty are the core teachers for 60 housestaff at Children's Hospital of New York and the medical students during their pediatric clerkship.
    Residency
In the late 1990's the residency program at Children's Hospital of New York was restructured to give new emphasis to primary care and community pediatrics. Residents have a weekly full-day of continuity clinic at the community based practices and an entire month of primary care in each year. During the ambulatory and community pediatrics blocks, resident have direct involvement in community based experiences with neighborhood organizations. Residents make home visits to their patients with faculty from the Division. These visits have proven to be a terrific laboratory for teaching residents about the role of physicians, understanding the doctor-patient relationship, and exploring the psychosocial component of illness and recovery.
Primary Care Clerkship Leaders in the General Pediatrics faculty have successfully introduced alternative methods of instruction into the medical school curriculum. Medical students participate in a longitudinal selective with community based primary care providers. Another popular medical school rotation run from the Division is the primary care clerkship. For five-weeks, third year medical students are assigned to a primary care experience in family medicine, general internal medicine or general internal medicine/general pediatrics. The primary care sites are located in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and the Indian Health Service in Arizona and New Mexico. This clerkship is one of the most popular rotations in the entire curriculum.

The nation is facing a public crisis in mental healthcare for infants, children and adolescents. Many children have mental health problems that interfere with normal development and functioning. In the United States, one in ten children and adolescents suffer from mental illness severe enough to cause some level of impairment (Burns, et al., 1995; Shaffer, et al., 1996). Yet, in any given year, it is estimated that about one in five of such children receive specialty mental health services (Burns, et al., 1995). Unmet need for services remains as high now as it was 20 years ago. Recent evidence compiled by the World Health Organization indicates that by the year 2020, childhood neuropsychiatric disorders will rise proportionately by over 50 percent, internationally, to become one of the five most common causes of morbidity, mortality, and disability among children.
Concerns about inappropriate diagnosis-that is, either over- or under-diagnosis-of children's mental health problems and about the availability of evidence-based (i.e., scientifically-proven) treatments and services for children and their families have sparked a national dialogue around these issues. There is broad evidence that the nation lacks a unified infrastructure to help these children, many of whom are falling through the cracks. Too often, children who are not identified as having mental health problems and who do not receive services end up in jail. Children and families are suffering because of missed opportunities for prevention and early identification, fragmented treatment services, and low priorities for resources.

The Surgeon General's Call To Action To Prevent Suicide, 1999
At a Glance: Suicide Among the Young
    • For young people 15-24 years old, suicide is the third leading cause of death, behind unintentional injury and homicide. In 1996, more teenagers and young adults died of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease combined.
    • Americans under the age of 25 accounted for 35% of the population, and 15% of all suicide deaths in 1996. The rate among children aged 10-14 was 1.6/100,000, the rate for children aged 15-19 was 9.7 per 100,000, and the rate for young people aged 20-24 was 14.5/100,000.
    • Important risk factors for attempted suicide in youth are depression, alcohol or other drug use disorder, and aggressive or disruptive behaviors.
    • Over the last several decades, the suicide rate in young people has increased dramatically. From 1952-1996, the incidence of suicide among adolescents and young adults nearly tripled, although there has been a general decline in youth suicides since 1994. From 1980-1996, the rate of suicide among persons aged 15-19 years increased by 14% and among persons aged 10-14 years by 100%. For African-American males aged 15-19, the rate increased 105%.

But the departing administrator said students had not vandalized property. Superintendent Nathan S. Greenberg agreed, choosing to handle the matter internally.
