Reader Report Innu Workshop with Caroline Grenot They still face today clearcutting, damming, mining, Nato low level flights training, violation of their traditional hunting, trapping and fishing rights. These are just a few issues, among many others, that affect the Innu people. Gilbert Pilot, from Mani-Utenam will be present at the Euromeeting and will be able to tell us more about the situation of the Innuat. He has been fighting for his rights and to preserve his culture for a long time. He was the spokesperson of the Coalition for Nitassinan for several years and has himself been incarcerated for having tried to stop the SM3 project. Today, he still faces a 3 years prison suspended sentence.
Report about the Innu Workshop
by Caroline Grenot Reader Due to serious health problems, the Innu delegate, Gilbert Pilot from Mani-Utenam could not come to Berlin and participate in the Innu workshop. Nevertheless, we kept to the work we had intended to do in accordance with him. Because of the absence of Gilbert Pilot in Berlin, the participants to the Innu workshop have agreed to propose their ideas and projects to Innu Nation and Innu Council of Nitassinan before making any decision. Projects and strategies should be discussed directly with these organizations and could be realized differently in each European countries, according to the action possibilities of each support group.

Natural Environment and Culture History
Introduction
The resources and environment of insular Newfoundland figured prominantly in the establishment and proliferation of Dorset Eskimo settlement on the Island. The primarily hunting-based subsistence of these and other prehistoric peoples required a knowledge of potential food resources as well as a familiarity with the geographical and ecological setting in which these resources were located. Southeastern Newfoundland, the focus of this work, possesses some features which serve to differentiate it from other regions of the island, and which likely presented new obstacles and possibilities to its Dorset Eskimo inhabitants.
Geology And Palaeoenvironment
Geologically the Avalon is composed of volcanic and sedimentary bedrock of Precambrian age. The rugged and irregular topography, and the highest landmarks of the area, are evidence of the resistant nature of these rocks. Cambrian slates and shales, with occasional beds of limestone, overlie the Precambrian deposits and are succeeded in turn by Ordovician sandstones and shales. Cambrian and Ordovician deposits are fossiliferous. The occurrence of these beds is irregular and unconformable, due to periods of intense erosion and frequent faulting (

Dorset Eskimo Research and the Stock Cove Project
A Review of Dorset Eskimo Archaeology
The history of Dorset Eskimo research in the eastern Canadian Arctic has been chronicled by several scholars. In 1959 W.E. Taylor presented a summary of contributions to that time. More recently Moreau S. Maxwell reviewed the emergence and development of Dorset Eskimo archaeology and the current concerns in the eastern Arctic, in the introduction to "Eastern Arctic Prehistory: Palaeo-Eskimo Problems" (1976). Albert Dekin (1978) dealt not only with Dorset Eskimo research, but with the more general field of Arctic archaeology in a volume combining a narrative of participants, events, and theories with an extensive bibliography. The following review is intended to impart something of the growth and expansion of Dorset Eskimo archaeology, and does not attempt to detail regional work. It relies on the above volumes as well as the original publications.
It might be said that Dorset Eskimo archaeology began indirectly in 1925, when Therkel Mathiassen published an initial description of Thule culture. Later in the same year Diamond Jenness was able to separate "Cape Dorset" artifacts from Thule ones in a mixed collection, and thus identify the Cape Dorset culture (Jenness 1925). Diagnostic of this newly-recognized culture were stone implements and bone harpoon heads of hitherto unknown types. Although Jenness did not hesitate in postulating the existance of an entirely new population to account for these strange implements, Mathiassen was by no means as certain, and in the 1927 "Report of the Fifth Thule Expedition" he argued that Cape Dorset culture was in fact a local expression of Thule culture.

Under entrees you will find scores of Cajun dishes, including gumbos, etouffees, and jambalaya. What may strike you as a bit unusual, however, is the number of dishes not normally considered Cajun. Upon closer examination, you'll find most of these are recipes for traditional dishes with a Cajun twist. Char's Original Cajun Recipes Designed to look like a kitchen, Char'scollection features a small but interesting variety of Cajun and Creole recipes that highlight the essentials of Louisiana cooking. Among the unique offerings here are Char's recipes for Cajun-style chili, spaghetti, and vegetable beef soup. Of course, there are plenty of Cajun standbys, including red and brown jambalaya, Louisiana roux gumbo, and shrimp/crawfish creole. Be forewarned, however, that some of the recipes call for such ingredients as andouille and tasso pork, which may be difficult to find.

Understanding ecosystems: a key to managing fisheries?
PDF of this article (530 KB) Janet Bradford-Grieve
Stuart Hanchet By increasing our knowledge of food webs we are learning more about the resilience of marine and freshwater ecosystems and the effects of fishing on the relationships between species. Ocean colour from the satellite-borne SeaWiFS sensor can be used to estimate the biomass of phytoplankton near the sea surface. Anyone involved in fisheries is required by the 1996 Fisheries Act to maintain the number of associated or dependent species above a level that ensures their long-term viability, and to maintain the biodiversity of the aquatic environment. In addition, it is becoming clear that the effects of fishing on ecosystems can have significant impacts on fisheries themselves. For example, over-fishing might remove too many carnivores from the top of the food chain, which can change the whole structure of the ecosystem, leading to an increase in phytoplankton and plankton-eating fish, and a decline in zooplankton. Thus, maintaining a balance between fish and mammalian predators is very important for sustaining viable marine ecosystems. As an example, disturbance of the food web is a likely cause of the non-recovery of cod stocks in eastern Canada. The fishery collapsed because of over-fishing, but predation by harp seals may be preventing the cod population from recovering. In other cases, fishing may have lead to an increase in non-commercial fish populations and this has possibly occurred on the Chatham Rise.

  • By 1600 Europeans had created the world’s first truly global economy Meanwhile, the "age of discovery" resulted in the greatest human catastrophe the world has ever known : 90% of Native Americans killed by 1600; slavery of 10s of millions of Africans. Cultural differences between the European and Americans was so immense that conflict was tragically inevitable in the 15th and 16th centuries. Summary of relations between the three major colonial powers in America and the Native Americans
Spain sought to Christianize and control the Indians (through the encomienda, hacienda and mission systems) The French sought to establish strong trade relations with the Indians; Jesuits sought to convert them. English settlers often sought to either move Indians westward or annihilate them II. Native Americans approx. 100 million c. 1500 (high estimate); probably 50-70 million Arrived more than 40,000 years ago via Bering Strait (called Beringia when it was above land) and eventually spread to tip of S. America (by 8,000 B. C.)
